Sadly, not the Billy Wilder version with its dynamic pairing of Charles Laughton and Marlene Dietrich, but don't despair just yet, for this TV movie of Agatha Christie's audacious courtroom whodunnit isn't bad, either. When it came to eccentric characterisations, Ralph Richardson could match Laughton twitch for twitch and he is wonderful as barrister Sir Wilfred Robarts, ably supported by Deborah Kerr (making her TV movie debut) as his fussy nurse. But it's Diana Rigg whom you'll be raving about afterwards, out-Dietriching Marlene with a wicked performance that surely ranks among her best.

Thoroughly likeable though relentlessly over-expanded movie version of a clever stage thriller. Some miscasting and artificiality is condoned by smart dialogue and handling, one celebrated performance, and a handful of surprises.

    Top-notch film

An excellent adaptation of an Agatha Christie stageplay. The standout performance from Charles Laughton is a constant delight and the supporting cast (Tyrone Power in his last completed film, Marlene Dietrich and Mrs Charles Laughton - Elsa Lanchester)provide sterling support as well. There is an excellent twist (which the closing credits ask you not reveal to others!) and a neat ending. Possibly one of the best courtroom dramas ever.
