    [Highly rated reviewer]

A dramatization, in modern theatrical style, of the life and thought of the Viennese-born, Cambridge-educated philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889-1951), whose principal interest was the nature and limits of language. A series of sketches depict the unfolding of his life from boyhood, through the era of the first World War, to his eventual Cambridge professorship and association with Bertrand Russell and John Maynard Keynes. The emphasis in these sketches is on the exposition of the ideas of Wittgenstein, a homosexual, and an intuitive, moody, proud, and perfectionistic thinker generally regarded as a genius.

In a twist on a previous review; I did not like the philosopher from recent reading, but did quite like the film. I thought Wittgenstein came over as pretentious, full of blabber, and just the sort of philosopher to give philosophy a bad name. I have been trying to get to grips with the postmodern and I think this film probably is I don't think the film would be very interesting without a little background interest in the man and his work

jarman marries some of the best features of theatre and cinema in his idiosyncratic and vivid interpretation of wittgenstein. it is highbrow and searching, but not oppressive, thanks to its friendly irony, and an uptempo beat. the scenes glide effortlessly, the acting is intimate and the ambience groovy. the set and art direction are a brilliant display of concept and economy. thankfully, this is not a grandiose attempt at an all-revealing insight into the philosopher's enigma, but an eloquent dialogue, and an individual perspective.

There is a flavour of Peter Greenaway and Lars Von Trier in this very lively yet somehow sad piece of work. It brings to life some difficult concepts in an sometimes amusing fashion. More like this please!

Knowing about Wittgenstein and his life at Cambridge I found this film very entertaining and thought provoking. A must see for all fans of Derek Jarman.

Disappointing. I like the philosopher, did not like the film. I thought it was pretentious and boring. I almost did not finish watching. .
