Eleven years after Woodstock, director Michael Wadleigh resurfaced with this classy, thoughtful, gory, but not in the least bit scary horror movie about a mutant breed of killer wolf with super-intelligent tracking abilities running wild in the Bronx. New York cop Albert Finney investigates, and, in a typical Wadleigh eco addition to Whitley Strieber's so-so supernatural novel, links the plight of the American Indian to the wolves' brutally violent acts; both were deprived of their homeland by nasty white settlers. Subjective camerawork, denoting the wolves' point of view, features extensive optical special effects so the prowling always makes for galvanising viewing, while Finney makes the most of his tart dialogue. It's a pity the payoff is such a letdown after the initially superior suspense.

This is one of the best horror films I've seen for a while, where has it been all these years! It's not one for effects but a very good horror nonetheless.
A must for horror fans.
Tedious, meandering werewolf picture which would have benefited greatly from losing about half an hour in the cutting room. 'Albert Finney' is ok as the detective hunting a mysterious killer, but the film moves at an absolute snail's pace, with many risible 'spooky' scenes which provoke laughter, not terror.
So many werewolf films are appallingly bad - stick with An American Werewolf In London.
