Director Fina Torres presents a sweet and sour love story/fairy tale with WOMAN ON TOP, the quirky story of Isabella (Penelope Cruz) a top-notch chef and glowing beauty who suffers from motion sickness. Playing up all of these characteristics, the film explores two of Cruz's love affairs: one with a restaurant-owner, and the other with the television producer of a cooking program. Though not in the same league as Like Water for Chocolate, this wafer-thin confection also touches on the magic of food. Penélope Cruz is the young wife with a knack for creating hot, tasty dishes who flees from Brazil to San Francisco when she discovers husband Murilo Benicio has been cheating on her. In the land of opportunity, her talents in the kitchen are soon discovered and she ends up hosting a TV cookery show in which she talks about spicy dishes in a foreign accent and flashes lots of cleavage. Rather unsurprisingly, her lovesick husband soon seeks her out. There are a few insights into the spirits of the ocean, the power of food and the sensuality of cooking before everyone ends up living happily ever after. Slight stuff, but male fans of Ms Cruz will no doubt leave the cinema feeling perfectly satisfied.
"...Cruz is stunning -- innocent and vulnerable yet possessing a mature grace and determined strength, all while sizzling with unchecked sensuality..."
I expected this to be a more sensuous affair, but turned out to be a glorified film about a TV chef.
Penelopé Cruz beats Delia Smith any day however and this is a nice no-brainer, perfect for a lazy night with a partner.
I must mention that the character "Michael" from TV's "Lost" appears as a transvestite !
I thought this was supposed to be a comedy but laughs were thin on the ground. If you like Penelope Cruz then you will like this as most of the movie seems to focus on her & her big hair. The storyline is sweet but the primary romantic interest is a drip!
Penelope Cruz is often amused by the useless skills she has picked up while rehearsing for film roles - she can gallop on a camel and chop vegetables really quickly. The actress always puts everything into movie characters, so she looks the part on screen - and she goes to great lengths to make sure film fans believe her performances. She took cooking lessons for Woman On Top and Volver - but admits she's not exactly the best chef. She tells WENN, "I can cook a little bit. I can cook a few... Read more
