Unexpectedly enjoyable
By skeadugenga (148 reviews) from Reading , 26 Oct 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
I really enjoyed this film - for a Brit flick its quite good. More likely to appeal to women, the male characters are background or catalysts in the central relationship between the two women - that makes it sound too serious, a lot of the feminine backchat was familiar and raised a smile. A gentle comedy - the perfect film for a night in with the girls. Open a bottle or two and you'll enjoy it even more.- Was this review helpful to you?

By Bradach (4 reviews) , 17 Mar 2013A thoroughly enjoyable film - great performances from Gina McKee and Helena Bonham Carter and solid cameos from Richard Wilson, Kenneth Cranham, Eileen Atkins and James Nesbitt. Edinburgh looks wonderful, cute kids, quirky humour and appropriate sound-track. What more could you want?- Was this review helpful to you?

Wasted opportunity
By Kirkcudbright (22 reviews) , 04 Mar 2013I didn't enjoy this- I mean, it's fine, but why do stories with female leads have to be about relationships with men and children? I can't imagine this film being acceptable to anyone if the two main chacters were men, and that feels insulting. It's a shame, because it seemed like the characters had more interesting thoughts to be explored-maybe they are in the book. It felt kind of lazy and cliched, and there was no real depth to anyone or any part of the story, it was as though all the characters were just walk-on parts- the kooky hippy irresponsible one, the sucessful frustrated one, the friendly cultured gay ones, the sexy but feckless one, the arty posh one, all very predictable, and there are no surpises.- Was this review helpful to you?

A bit disjointed
By cw18 (6 reviews) , 23 Aug 20124 characters turned up about half way through with little/no indication on how the 2 main characters knew them.
An easy enough watch, but probably one for a female on her own with a bottle of wine and a tub of ice-cream or box of chocolates........ especially if she's having man trouble at the time.- Was this review helpful to you?

Great Friendships Put To The Test!!
By laneyb (256 reviews) from Rochester, Kent , 11 Mar 2012Absolutely enjoyed this one. I haven't seen much work of Gina Mckee or Helena Bonham Carter, but what I have seen i've enjoyed. I'll most definitely be watching again. Strong Friendships put to the test big time.
James Nesbitt and Richard Wilson, another great pair of actors added to the mix was fab!
Incidentally, Helena Bonham Carter so puts me in mind of a Female equivalent of the Great and Fabulous 'Johnny Depp'- Was this review helpful to you?
