Three years after his marvellous LA Confidential, director Curtis Hanson returned with this quirky, dark and unforgettable comedy based on the novel by Michael Chabon. Grady Tripp (Michael Douglas) is an ageing, pot-smoking college professor in Pittsburgh whose life is on shaky ground — his young third wife has left him, he's having an affair with the (married) college chancellor (Frances McDormand) and she's pregnant, plus he's struggling with the follow-up to his celebrated first novel. He also has to deal with an odd but potentially talented student called James (Tobey Maguire). Hanson expertly weaves all of these threads (along with a dead dog, an unpredictable literary agent and a tempting female student) into a mesmerising and often moving drama complete with fascinating characters and a wicked sense of humour. Douglas relishes one of his best roles, and the film also boasts great performances from Maguire and McDormand, with Robert Downey Jr, Katie Holmes and Rip Torn superb in support.

A funny, entertaining and at times poignant study of a talented writer's mid-life crisis. Michael Douglas surprises by giving quite easily his best performance since "Falling Down" and Tobey Maguire again proves why he is one the best actors of his generation. Robert Downey Jr, Katie Holmes and others give this film further class. Defintely worth a couple of hours of your time.

    A Gem

This is fun and unexpectedly charming and amusing. Rent it for great central performances and some nice lines and moments - and because it's sweet and watchable and warm. Has some nice cinematic moments and lovely characterisations.

Lawrence (a bearded and tweedy Dennis Quaid) is a professor of literature and a pompous ass. Maybe the death of his wife made him that way - maybe he always had it in him, but he's organized his life in such a way that no one else gets much of a look in. Not his pissed off teenage son, James (Ashton Holmes); not his colleagues on the faculty; certainly not his poor students; and least of all his own ne'er do well brother Chuck (Thomas Haden Church). The only one who genuinely likes Lawrence is Read more
