A not so wonderful film
By Daniel Pollard from Manchester, England , 07 Sep 2010[Highly rated reviewer]
An award winning film about a rural Thai community rebuilding its hotels and infrastructure following the 2004 tsunami. Its a classic boy-from-the city meets girl-from-the-countryside story and their subsequent relationship, which juxtaposes small town values against big city ideas. On the face of it, its a genre film, but one that looks to show a different culture and their recent struggles. Sadly, the finished product is anything but interesting, its so painfully slow, dull and straight edged for its modest running time that it feels about double its actual length. There arent enough narrative twists for it to remain anything close to captivating and its complete lack of dramatic drive is frustrating. Its a well-made film, but one thats so understated and quiet that its entirely forgettable and passable.- Was this review helpful to you?

(5)Much to like in this gentle film
By Bill_M (4 reviews) , 10 Apr 2011Different from most Thai films - a gentle, atmospheric (and perhaps somewhat slow-moving) love story. Having lived in Thailand before made the film more interesting to me, and I thought it did accurately represent many aspects of life and the attitude towards relationships in rural Thailand. However, the rather minimal dialogue was a negative, and as others have commented, the storyline is a bit disappointing towards the end of the film. Overall, if you are interested in other cultures and don't mind a movie that is not action all the way, you would probably enjoy this movie.- Was this review helpful to you?

Wonderful Beginning
By zorilla (221 reviews) from Kew, Richmond , 17 Mar 2011The first hour of this film is lovely, charming and indeed, wondeful. It follows the slowly developing relationship between two thoroughly decent people, both of whom you can't help but root for...
...and then suddenly it all seems to go very wrong and the final half hour seems to be leftover scenes from an altogether different movie.
If I'd stopped watching after about an hour, my rating for film would have had a couple of extra stars- Was this review helpful to you?

Winningly subtle love story
By Rosster (39 reviews) from Airdrie , 10 Jan 2010This film presents its tale ever so 'softly, softly catchee monkey' but does not suffer for it, for all that. I loved the gradual build up of mutual love between the two chief protagonists, and delighted in the lack of distraction of any other sub-plots. I would happily spend another cold, winter evening stuck indoors with the heating on and 'curled up in front of the fire' revisiting this. Good performances by the leading actors. Just 'nice'....- Was this review helpful to you?

A certain type
By a customer from The North , 09 Oct 2009A gentle, evocative film with a little underlying tension. Has a similar mood to Last Life in The Universe or Cafe Lumiere, allowing the viewer to enter the characters world via an interest in them rather than any great story.- Was this review helpful to you?
