A self Indulgent depressing version.....

Being a 'period drama' addict, albeit of the more traditional variety, I had high hopes for this film. Perhaps my love of traditionalism is the problem here, as i do realise it was intended to be a much more modern, gritty and raw take on Bronte's classic story. So maybe I am not the intended audience for Andrea Arnold's version. But... I found the film dull, very slow and drawn out with no pace whatsoever, little or no dialogue, lacking in storyline, and above all, extremely bleak and depressing. Long drawn out shots of the harsh yorshire moors, needless scenes of animal suffering, what seemed like forever on scenes of insects crawling around and in short, unable to evoke in me any feeling or interest in the characters whatsoever. I couldn't wait for it to end and only stayed as long as I did to give it a chance and get my moneys worth. In the end I regretted every penny i spent on the cinema ticket and felt miserable and depressed for the rest of the day, and the next...- Was this review helpful to you?

Nevertheless I would bet my life savings that the disgusting four letter words spoken in the film are never used in the book and, like some other reviewers here, I imagine Emily Bronte would be spinning in her grave that her name has been associated with this utterly horrible movie.
It was shown in the cinema in an almost square 4:3 aspect ratio (presumably meant to be 'arty') and with its jerky camera work and a mostly dark picture, this is as bleak as anything could be. It is relentlessly dull with grey skies almost throughout. Doesn't the sun EVER shine in Yorkshire? It was a long time before there was finally a bit of blue sky, but it didn't last long. And if the sky was dull, that's nothing compared to the dialogue. The characters are all unlikeable, the (apparent) love between Cathy and Heathcliff totally unconvincing and, just in case everything else wasn't depressing enough, Andrea Arnold decided to throw in some grotesquely awful animal cruelty as well. As for the standard ''no animals were harmed in the making of this film'' in the end credits (of every film), that statement can be taken with a pinch of salt. Just read the reviews of Water For Elephants about the off screen cruelty to elephants. If I was the kind of person who ever walked out of movies this would definitely be one such film. It was a blessed relief when it finally ended, and while the credits rolled I could hear various people in the audience saying how much they disliked it. It fills me with revulsion and I would give it zero stars if the website would allow it.

Personal and sensuous
By a customer , 06 May 2013I love the book - IMO one of the best ever written. This version is true to the book and the period rather than being the romantic epic that many versions try to be. It was incredible how the movie developed the personal moments and emotions rather than having to narrate those unfilmable aspects of the story. I love the horse riding scene with Cathy's hair blowing in Heathcliffe's face. I can almost feel the warmth of a loved one from my youth. A very sensuous movie.- Was this review helpful to you?

Don't bother with this one

Faithful to the tone of the novel
By a customer , 22 Apr 2013Far from being a 'self-indulgent' version of a classic period drama as one reviewer has written, Arnold's version of Wuthering Heights is probably the ONLY one that is in anyway faithful to the tone of the book. The same reviewer calls it 'depressing' one wonders if they have ever read the novel - it's hardly cheerful! This isn't another tedious sunday evening period drama for fat girls to cry and eat ice cream to, if you want such drivel don't rent this and just watch whatever rubbish is on ITV.- Was this review helpful to you?

Absolutely Awful Adaptation of a great Story

The casting was atrocious and the hand held wind swept shots of rushes and wildlife did nothing to lift the boring storyline and unintersting character acting. I love the Bronte sotories and this time Andrea truly let us down producing this dreary and pointless film. Absolute PANTS.- Was this review helpful to you?
