There is a gap in your life...this movie will fill it
By fintan (3 reviews) from UK , 17 Oct 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
This is my favourite story. It takes the strongest emotions we have beyond the norm, beyond the grave. I love this particular version as it is so innocent and pure, yet all the time, envy and hate are just around the corner. It's a shame they only managed to include half the book but the strength of the acting from the two central stars more than makes up for it. I struggle to watch the other versions because of this. Merle Oberon is beautiful and has the most expressive eyes I have seen. She swings from the two extremes of her character: the desire to be wild and free with the love of her life to the vanity of wearing silk dresses and need of acceptance into society, in a moment. Laurence Olivier is tall, moody and very sexy and deftly shows how rejection and the need for revenge can take over a person making them blind to the truth.
Watch this film with a duvet, lots of chocolate and a box of tissues. You will be enchanted by it and it will touch your heart forever.
Trivia Time: Merle apparently had the time the movie was set in changed to fit with the dresses she wanted to wear.- Was this review helpful to you?

(34)An honest interpretation
By a customer , 28 Feb 2013This movie is uncomplicated, atmospheric and passionate. I love to watch the old black and white versions of classic novels as they tend to portray the characters most faithfully, just as I picture them while reading the book. Ignore that sometimes the quality of acting isn't too good, and that the film sets and scenery may sometimes be flimsy, and get lost in the moment. Magical.- Was this review helpful to you?

Watch this film
By Peelster (1 review) , 22 Mar 2012Ignore the luke warm reviews, and anyone that tries to tell you that Lawrence Olivier's an old ham. Watch this film, and find out what all the fuss is about. Remains an immensely powerful and moving performance that has more than stood the test of time. All of the cast are superb, and they somehow manage to transcend the gloss that you might expect from the Hollywood studios of that era. A 'must see'.- Was this review helpful to you?

Beautiful story beuatifully told
By geeward88 (15 reviews) from Manchester , 01 Nov 2010This adaptation of Emily Bronte's novel is an excellent movie. Heathcliff is brilliantly acted by Laurence Olivier. The beautiful scenery is made more cold and stark by the black and whit picture. Definitely worth watching.- Was this review helpful to you?

If you're a fan of the novel - avoid the movie
By AshleighandLysander (3 reviews) from Ramsgate , 28 May 2009As a massive Wuthering Heights fan I found the film really disappointing. Other reviews stated that this was a good film to watch if you're studying the novel for A Level - which I am not - but I atleast expected, with that in mind, for the movie to tell the same story the novel did! Not so!
For a start Isabella manages to outlive Heathcliffe, Cathy does not give birth to Catherine, and the character of young Linton (Heathcliffe and Isabellas son) does not exist - thus the who half of Brontes novel concerning Catherine the second, and her marriage to Linton, her cousin, is omitted entirely. I therefore think this would make a pretty aweful A Level guide! There are other flaws with the plot and layout, such as that Ellen is living at Wuthering Heights when Mr. Lockwood gets caught out in the storm, when she should be living at The Grange, this was one of many niggly faults that Wuthering Heights fans will pick up on.- Was this review helpful to you?
