The Truth - to protect it. This season and the entire series ended kinda abruptly. Although the makers tried to stay true to whole story, they had to somehow wrap it all up, while trying to answering all the questions, but also continue to make it seem realistic. However, I think it did neither of both very well.

Mulder finds himself lost again. Scully finds herself lost again. The characters from the past, even though they have been pretty much fleshed out in past episodes, they were not themselves in this movie. The return of some of the old characters have awkward introductions and it seemed as if the filmakers wanted to create a high-school reunion to satisfy the nostalgia and the fact that true hardcore fans will miss the show so much.

In fact, the show had died a slow death since the last film, Fight the Future, where afterwards the storywriting became very odd and disjointed. It is interesting though how things have developed for Mulder and Scully. The failings of the show took on a greater plunge when they scripted in that Mulder and Scully fell in love. The whole point was that Mulder and Scully had this sexual tension that they could not satisfy for professional reasons. To end that was the biggest mistake of the show I believe.

To hardcore X-Files fans - you have got to watch it. To mediocre fans, well, most of you would not be watching after the last film anyway . . .
