An improvement on The Last StandBy Ben4King (14 reviews) from London , 01 May 2009
[Highly rated reviewer]An improvement on The Last Stand
After Brett Ratner's dire The Last Stand fumbled the ball, Wolverine arrives with the future of the X-Men franchise resting on its shoulders. The result, something nowhere near Singers classy X2, yet just about good enough to be worth seeing.
Not being well versed in comic book lore, its tricky for me to judge its respect to the source material however Hugh Jackman is reliable (and hairy) as ever, even if he is hamstrung by a grumpy vengeance storyline, that forces him to be a moody git for most of the running time. Its much more fun to watch him making flippant quips and chomping cigars, but those moments are few and far between. Liev Schreiber's great as an unhinged (and even more hairy) Sabretooth, Dominic Monaghan's Bolt is interesting but sadly underused and I didn't think there would ever come a time that I would say this, but Ryan Reynolds is actually funny. I know, its shocking!
There are too many other cameos to list here and at times it just feels like watching a fan service conveyor-belt. Several potentially interesting people come and go without ever being explored and the wider context of a fragile, paranoid society on the brink of a culture war between mutants and humans, is not touched on at all. Its a straight action-revenge story that inspires no mulling of the bigger issues whatsoever.
It does at least all hang together. Its helps that it is bookended by a pulsating opening sequence that jumps between several historic battlefields and has a satisfyingly epic finale that neatly ties in with the first X-Men movie. I guess I was just hoping I might be able to engage my brain a little bit.

Hugh-gely Disappointing!!By BethJohn (17 reviews) , 04 Oct 2011All in all very disappointing . Good to get an origin story of Wolverine and Hugh Jackman is the best thing in this movie. Yet, the story was pretty poor, the majority of the action a let down and the majority of the CGI was somewhat lacking.
Crazy but entertainingBy TrogTrident (88 reviews) from Rochdale , 03 Oct 2011The first two X-Men films were great. The third less so. And like a lot of people I really liked the character of Wolverine.
So, to get a chance to watch a Wolverine movie was something I was looking forward to. Until I saw the reviews which were very mixed. But having just caught the film it isn't half bad.
Yes, it's very silly and the story's not the greatest. But it's a superhero film so what do you expect? It's got bags of energy, there's plenty to see and even the quiet spots have some nice moments and a few little twists.
Rent it. It's great fun.
Hugh's the best?By a customer , 19 Sep 2011An absolute master-class, with the amazing Hugh Jackman in it. The ripped, rather good looking and funny Hugh Jackman shows us at his best, definitely his best in the X-Men movies as he takes on just about everyone. I thought it was a brilliant movie with plenty of action, but unlike other action movie this one actually has a brilliant story line. Comic Book Movies ftw
Not very entertainingBy a customer , 14 Aug 2011Film was rather short.... Unsatisfying.... Its okay for passing the time but dont expect a major thrill from this film. Now what i wanted to know and watch was wolverines origins but beimg a fan of the comics this movie does not share the same link.
Would recommend this.By TTiimm (11 reviews) , 05 Aug 2011I wasn't expecting too much from this movie to be really honest with it being a prequel. I was expecting lots of shoe horned scenes put in to try and explain issues with the earlier movies that would only rea,lly please the die hard X-Men fans. I am pleased to say I was pleasantly proven wrong.
Effects are outstanding and actually combine with a very well written and acted out script. Anyone that has seen any of the previous X-Men movies will just love this one. Although you certainly don't have to have seen any of the other movies to enjoy this as it stands alone as a great film.
Would recommend this movie to all and not just the X-Men fans!!!
