Although the film is the traditional road/buddy movie, albeit with a highly graphic content, it doesn't quite meet its promise in terms of human warmth and endearment. The characters are likeable, sure, but they don't make the emotional connection with the viewer that would deliver a more compelling film.

Beautifully shot with gorgeous, sensual cinematography this film is a poignant snap shot of three lives and a beach trip. The idea of truth is bandied around in an interesting and philosophical way but without being too highbrow. Overall I loved this film and as usual the acting of Gael Garcia Bernal is wonderful and underplayed, as is the acting of his co-stars. A brilliant and enjoyable watch.

i love the realism, seemingly simple story this movie tells. I say 'seemingly' because I feel this film in fact peels the layers of preconceived notions of what's important in life. To coin a phrase, there's more to this movie than meets the eye. And with flesh and skin galore, there is indeed a lot that meets the eye. However, none of the explicit scenes are gratuitous - they all fit into the narrative and what this film is about and what it says. The three main leads (Maribel verdu (Luisa), Gael Garcia Bernal (Julio) and Diego Luna (Tenoch)) are all brilliant. Through Luisa's character, you get a perspective of what really matters as we go through life.

Hedonistic middle-class boys having fun. World-weary woman joining in for one last fling. Beauty and simplicity juxtaposed with glimpses of military rule. Ultimately all we have is love.

First sex: there's plenty of it right from the start, something that I see has upset most of the negative reviewers on this website. Did they not notice it is 18 rated? Because the sex, masturbation included, is neither gratuitous or exploitative but essential to the story and graphic without being pornographic. The death is largely introduced to the film though talk-overs, which for example inform the viewer of the sticky end of a bit-part character. While these were slightly intrusive at times, the overall effect broadened the horizons of the film in a way that lifted it above the 'coming of age crisis for privileged young things' genre. Then the road. Who cares that it could not possibly take that long (in Mexico) to drive to a beach? The wonderful acting, great script and natural beauty of Mexico make the whole drink and drug addled journey just as intoxicating for the viewer. On the way the boys learn some of life's lessons at Luisa's hands, as is mandatory for films of this nature, while Luisa is on a journey of her own.
