Too childish for its relatively adult content
By The14Amazons (1 review) from Chorley , 25 Nov 2012[Highly rated reviewer]
The film is quite ridiculous from the very beginning, with bizarre costumes and cartoonish CGI coupled with a lot of playing to the camera and general mugging. Although clearly intended as a general joke, and never in any danger of anybody taking it seriously, there's a little too much nudging and winking at the audience. It would probably work best as a midnight movie at a film festival, with an actual audience there to get into the spirit of things - it doesn't work as well when watched from the solitude of my sofa. It would probably work best of all for an audience familiar with the original anime, as there are clearly a lot of references to it in the film. In making YATTERMAN, Miike seems to have forgotten that those colourful childhood memories lose a lot of their lustre if they're examined too close up, though.- Was this review helpful to you?

(3)Absolute nonsense from beginning to end. Loved it!
By llello (1 review) , 09 May 2013This film is bizarre from the very start. Strange costumes, crazy live action CGI characters and a very Japanese sense of humour. Its defiantly not a film for everyone and it wasnt anything like I imagined it would be when comparing it to the 70s TV show. Cant say I didnt enjoy it though, cos I did.- Was this review helpful to you?

In memory of....
By Korgull (19 reviews) , 24 Mar 2013Yatterman was one of the first anime tv shows of my childhood and it was, like many other things of that time, long forgotten. What a pleasant surprise to see that Miike didn't do the same as me. I enjoyed every silly minute of this film and cannot recommend it enough to whoever had a first hand experience with the 30+ y. o. anime. The slapstick, kinky humour, the tunes, the preposterous mechas and the complete idiocy of the tv show are all there with a maniacal attention to the detail. Great entertainment for those old enough to remember the show and for those who can appreciate a product probably meant for the Japanese market only!- Was this review helpful to you?
