Entertaining
By Sheenagh Antonis from Belfast , 17 Feb 2005[Highly rated reviewer]
I'm reviewing this film as a native English speaker who watches the occasional Indian language films. (It's in Hindi with a bit of Punjabi).
I tend to stick to classics from the 1950s but this one was recommended to me because it was filmed entirely in the UK. Usually I find some of the modern Indian movies ones a bit(!) cheesey but I found Jalwa (which means 'magic') moving and funny.
The story is about a son from India come to London in search of his long lost dad, now married with another family.
At the start, the Indian character (Salman Khan) arrives in London where a British Indian explains to him that he shouldn't feel homesick because India is in London too - of course he does this via a huge song'n'dance number in Trafalgar Square! It was strange to see modern UK cityscapes used in romantic dance numbers and they work pretty well (at one point an ASDA ad was rather distracting though).
The bits that work best were the comedy. There were some really funny bits, and one song really stood out, O Jaane Jigar.- Was this review helpful to you?

(9)A entertaining wee film
By splorp (1 review) from Balerno , 21 Jul 2008Apparently set in London it's clearly filmed in Edinburgh and Glasgow. One of the first (surprisingly catchy) songs is sung soon after the main protagonist arrives in London. Only the fact that it's on top of the Princes Mall shopping centre with Edinburgh castle in the background and Edinburgh tour buses whizzing around in the reverse shots gives away that it's no tin London! Other songs are performed in Glasgow's George Square (not Trafalgar Square as noted by another reviewer)
Dodgy geography aside, this is an entertaining wee film with some great songs.- Was this review helpful to you?

Good Bollywood whatching
By ruth hume from southport, england , 08 Nov 2006I am English and have to use sub titles so I can not watch all Indian movies and many I dont want to. I enjoy this type of movie as it is colourful, entertaining, with a story line, all of which makes a relaxing watch.. Salman is nice to look at too.- Was this review helpful to you?
