LOVEFiLM Review
-
By Tom Charity from LOVEFiLM
YES is Sally Potter's ambitious film depicting a passionate love affair between an American woman (Joan Allen) and a Middle-Eastern man (Simon Abkarian) in which they confront some of the greatest conflicts of our generation.

er .... no !
By Paul Jay from London, England .. , 08 Sep 2006[Highly rated reviewer]
I'm struggling to comprehend some of the flowery plaudits lavished on this film in previous reviews? even comparing Sally Potter with The Bard!
To my mind this is a classic example of style over substance. What is with the rhyming couplets? pure pretention on a stick ..
The whole backbone of the story just doesn't ring true for me. Honestly - why would an attractive, intelligent woman be interested in a beirut kitchen worker who looks like one of The Chuckle Brothers?!
What's with Shirley Henderson and the cleaning connection? ... and Sheila Hancock's Communist aunt from Ulster is just ridiculous, and the worse attempt at a Northern Irish accent I have ever heard ..
You only have to see the 'making of' featurettes in the extras to see just how into herself Sally Potter is ..

(68)The rhyme makes it sublime
By a customer , 18 Oct 2012An unusual film in that the dialogue is in rhyme. I found the rhythm compelling, it drew me in completely. It was completely refreshing to watch something so different.
Whilst I was convinced by Joan Allen's portrayal of the bored wife of a politician, I was not so convinced by her portrayal of the mistress with a never-known passion awakened by the Lebanese chef.
Abkarian, however, is completely convincing as one who could awaken such a passion in a woman made cold by her husband's indifference to her.
Whilst I am aware the style is not for everyone, it is what I enjoyed most.- Was this review helpful to you?

OH YES!!
By dollface22 (1 review) , 14 Jun 2011An extremely unusual film. I was so drawn in from the beginning that I only became aware of the use of rhyme within the script 10-15 minutes into the film, after that I was absolutely hooked. Intelligent writing. The acting was superbly understated and natural. Thought provoking, seductive and very clever. Will be following Sally Potter's work.- Was this review helpful to you?

Worth watching
By JB2AYS (1 review) , 06 Apr 2011Almost whimsical, but thought provoking. I thought it quite clever and refreshing. Nicely understated even when he helps her climax in the restuarant.- Was this review helpful to you?

By a customer from Bath, UK , 02 Oct 2010It seems that people either love or loathe this film. Well I loved it and now the morning after - am just about to watch the extra features before showing and lending this film to as many friends as I can. I will be taking notice of who loves and who hates it... My husband to my suprise is in the No camp...despite being a romantic, musical, deep thinker and a Shakespear lover!- Was this review helpful to you?

A brave and unusual film
By Essoldo (45 reviews) from Bodmin , 04 May 2010I knew nothing about this film except that my wife had seen it before and loved it. Once I cottoned on to the rhyming couplets (took about 10 minutes) I found them distracting, I have to say - I was constantly trying to second-guess where the rhyme was going to come. Still don't see what the director was after. On the other hand it's beautifully acted and shot, and did a good job of pointing up the cultural differences between the four principals - husband, wife, Lebanese chef and cleaner.- Was this review helpful to you?
