You Only Live Twice

Sean Connery returns as Agent 007 in YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE. With the Soviet Union and the United States blaming each other for mysteriously missing space capsules, nuclear warfare between the two superpowers seems imminent. However, Her Majesty's Secret Service suspects the rockets are being held in the Sea of Japan and assigns James Bond to fake his death in order to go undercover. Believed to be dead by the public at large, Bond travels to Japan to track down the missing U.S. and Russian space capsules. Racing against the nuclear clock, 007 discovers that the maniacal Ernst Stavro Blofeld (Donald Pleasence), the luscious Helga Brandt (Karin Dor), and their terrorist organization SPECTRE have planned to incite a full-scale global war. With the help of Japanese agents Aki (Akiko Wakabayashi), Kissy Suzuki (Mie Hama), Tiger Tanaka (Tetsuro Tamba), and a slew of ninjas, Bond must once again save the world from nuclear obliteration.

For his first directorial take on a Bond movie, Lewis Gilbert draws on storytelling techniques from his previous films ALFIE and THE 7TH DAWN (quick cuts, long aerial pans), rendering Roald Dahl's clever script with a fluidity not seen in previous 007 films.

    One of the very best of the Bonds, boasting a jaw-dropping pace and impeccable action sequences amid stunning scenery. Sean Connery, in slyly macho mode as 007, goes on a mission to Japan to take on crime syndicate Spectre and its evil boss Blofeld (Donald Pleasence). Director Lewis Gilbert ensures no expense is spared (no wonder Blofeld's cat is a luxurious Persian) and designer Ken Adam puts that production money where his volcano is. As a bonus, one of the writers is Roald Dahl. Eat your bargain-basement heart out, Pierce Brosnan!

    The Bond saga at its most expensive and expansive, full of local colour and in-jokes, with an enormously impressive set for the climactic action.

    THE BEST CONNERY/BOND FILM, PEROID!

    ' You Only Live Twice' is the 5th official 007: James Bond film and it is the best of the Sean Connery era. although ' Goldfinger' the third Bond film is great it is second best bond of the Connery era after this movie. with a screenplay by non - other than Roald Dahl{author of ' Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, Boy: Tales OF Childhood, Going Solo, Fantastic Mr Fox} who makes this film the PIPE DREAM for a Bond movie. the original story in Ian Fleming's book of the same title about Blofeld's Garden Of Death is replaced with a story about a space station hidden inside a volcano which is more loyal to Fleming's ' Moonraker' novel. The film still sticks to the book's location: Japan. producers Harry Saltzman & Albert R ' Cubby' Broccoli put every penny on the screen once more. there is a very sketchy but interesting character in that of Helga Brandt{but Roald Dahl for all his brilliance could have padded out her character a bit more.}

    All in all if your into hi - tech bond films this is the one for you. with two great Bond girls the sweet and gutsy Aki { she's IN LOVE with Bond}to the also feisty agent Kissy Suzuki{Suzuki is the name of a car - maybe Fleming loved Suzukis and felt like kissing them? - hm...} this film also stars Charles Gray as Mister Henderson who also did an excellent job of making a really creepy version of Ernst-Stavro-Blofeld in 1971's ' Diamonds Are Forever' which is another review altogether!, must see!

    not the best but still very good

    Albert R 'Cubby'Broccoli & Harry Satlzman were going to have this as

    the first film in their hopes for a series of bond films but eventually settled with' Doctor No' after court trial from Kevin McClory and his friend stating that Ian Fleming had stolen their idea for his book and that Kevin McClory and his friend had thought up this idea for a possible but unsuccessful way to bring Bond to the big screen. McClory would later go on to produce ' Thundberball' 's remake ' Never Say Never Again' but served as producer for this official bond film in which Broccoli & Saltzman surved as Executive Producers. there is an excellent femme fatale in Fiona Volpe who is sent by man known as Emilio Largo a.k.a. Number Two{ this later inspired Robert Wagner's Number Two in the ' Austin Powers' films.} Anthony Dawson played Ernst Stavro Blofeld once more but for the last time.
