You Were Never Lovelier

South American hotel magnate Edwardo Acuna (Adolphe Menjou) has a thorn in his side. Maria (Rita Hayworth), his beautiful nubile daughter, refuses to seriously consider marriage. A traditional patriarch, Mr. Acuna wants his girls married off one by one. So until Maria's mated, he won't allow either of her lovesick younger sisters to wed. Knowing Maria likes orchids, her father creates a secret admirer by sending anonymous love letters and fresh flowers from a mystery man. When Robert (Fred Astaire), a talented entertainer in Mr. Acuna's employ, delivers one of the phony love letters, Maria mistakes him for the suitor in question. After Robert takes one look at Maria, he decides he doesn't mind being mistaken for her smitten wooer. But a tap-dancing crooner is last thing Acuna wants for a son-in-law. This first-rate musical romance features "I'm Old Fashioned," "Dearly Beloved" and the title song "You Were Never Lovelier."

The second wartime pairing (after You'll Never Get Rich) of the marvellous Rita Hayworth and the ineffable Fred Astaire is a delight, as they dance to a superb Jerome Kern score with Johnny Mercer lyrics, including I'm Old Fashioned and Dearly Beloved. The plot is silly and the budget skimpy, but the two stars are radiant, possibly owing to the fact that they were “an item” on this movie. They also happened to have known each other all their dancing lives, since Fred was half of Fred and Adele Astaire and the young Hayworth, as Margarita Carmen Cansino, was part of the Dancing Cansinos. Watch for a pre-Jolson Story Larry Parks.

The colour dvd cover suggests that the movie would be in colour but it was B&W. This should be stated in the write up. I thought it had been digitally re-mastered or whatever it is they do these days!
