An affectionate parody that pays homage to the FRANKENSTEIN films (from the novel FRANKENSTEIN by Mary Shelley) directed by James Whale in the 1930s, YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN is both a zany comedy and cinematic tour de force. Written by director Mel Brooks and the star of the film, Gene Wilder, YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN has all the usual--and in this case slightly unusual--suspects: the reluctant scientist Frederick Frankenstein, who is actually the grandson of the infamous creature-creator (pronounced Fronken-steen and played by Wilder), his spoiled fiancee (Madeline Kahn), Igor the pop-eyed hunchback (Marty Feldman), his dizzy assistant (Teri Garr), the castle's hideous head housekeeper (Cloris Leachman), and, of course, the Monster (Peter Boyle). And then there are the sets--the original ones used in the Whale films--the beautiful black-and-white cinematography, and the fine screenplay. Combining noirish elegance with uproarious sight gags and double entendres is a feat Brooks pulls off fabulously, directing the wonderful ensemble to act with sensitivity and humanistic feelings as well as with lunatic abandon. YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN is a treat from beginning to end.

This loopy send-up of classic chiller clichés from Universal's monster heyday is one of director Mel Brooks's best comedies, and it's also one of the genre's most thorough and successful fright film parodies. Gene Wilder plays the infamous baron's grandson, who copies his ancestor's experiments only to create the singularly inane Peter Boyle. Filmed in sumptuous black and white, and shot on sets used in the 1931 original Frankenstein, Brooks's ingenious tribute is often hysterically funny and always a scream. Madeleine Kahn's “bride”, Gene Hackman's blind hermit, Marty Feldman's hunchbacked Igor and the marvellous “Putting on the Ritz” musical number add to the fun and give this loving homage real staying power.

The most successful of Mel Brooks's parodies, Mad Magazine style; the gleamingly reminiscent photography is the best of it, the script being far from consistently funny, but there are splendid moments.

Still Brilliant
I made my kids watch this because I was determined not to let them force me to watch the Scooby Doo Movie again!
Once they got passed the black and white stigma, OH MY GOD DAD HOW OLD IS THIS? They absolutely loved it.
I love this film and have seen it so many times I quote it in my sleep and I am happy the love for this film has now been handed down to the next generation of idiots!
Coffee down the nose type laughs. I love it and will forever be one of my favourites.
If you haven't seen it get it RENTED!!! -

Brilliant!
I have no idea if A Customer from NEWCASTLE & Minty actually watched this film, but it doesn't looked like they did! Think they need a humour transplant!

Leachman set for Hollywood honour

Oscar winner Cloris Leachman is to be honoured by Hollywood's top businessmen at a gala next week (17Apr09). The Young Frankenstein star, 82, will be handed a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce at its 88th Annual Installation & Awards Luncheon next Friday. Past recipients have included movie veterans Debbie Reynolds and Esther Williams. Read more
