There's no soul whatsoever in Isaac Julien's inept social drama set during the Queen's Silver Jubilee year of 1977. Heavily promoted as the first movie from a British-born gay black director, Julien throws everything (and the kitchen sink) into his unsubtle appraisal of how both minority groups blossomed during the punk era. It could have worked if he'd used proper actors to play the two pirate radio disc jockeys out to solve the violent death of a gay friend. Valentine Nonyela and Mo Sesay just don't have the presence to focus attention away from the embarrassment of glitches they're surrounded by.

    UK souljazzfunkboogietime!

This is the closest the film industry came to

documenting the late seventies UK soul/ dance scene. Some great music(Roy Ayres,Charles Earland,Blackbyrds) is included in this story of friendship and murder which is a bit muddled in places but the vibe is there!

Also reminded me how Britain has changed in the past 20 years or so.

With some proper jazz-dance scenes this could have been a UK Beat Street!

    One for the soulboys...

My Rating here is for the soundtrack only

Such a shame- I had been reccommended this because of the great soundrack, but unfortunately this was its only appealing feature.

The acting is a bit wooden, it's badly directed and the storyline is a bit flimsy- especially towards the end- it's like they had run out of budget and were in a ruch to get it finished. Overall its a bit shabby and such a shame as the aforementioned soundtrack, as well as subject matter and the era it is set in are the basis for a great film.

Perhaps Shane meadows should do a remake or something!
