LOVEFiLM Review Your Sister's Sister

  • 3.5 stars out of 5

    By Tom Charity from LOVEFiLM

Indie and largely improvised, this simple and thought-provoking drama is held up by its cast, including Emily Blunt and Mark Duplass.

There's clearly a pattern of people watching the first twenty minutes and turning this off. What a waste! I'm writing this review largely as a response to that: my girlfriend and I totally fell in love with Your Sister's Sister, and have been waiting for the DVD since seeing it at the cinema.

Ok, so it's not a film for everyone. It's a bit of a slow burner with an admittedly awkward first scene. But it soon warms up into a humble classic. Don't expect a laugh-a-minute gutbuster; this is a classy, quiet pleasure and a very human drama.

It's a film about real life and normal people (with a slightly weird plot twist towards the end). It's got bucketloads of charm, three strong characters, and a gorgeous soundtrack. We also like Dan in Real Life, The Dish, and Episodes, and this draws favourable comparisions to all three.

  • No, this is not a film

Is this really a movie? It could be a bad television pilot which never gets made. I'm probably judging too soon. First thought: are we really supposed to be interested in the 'truthful' but not dead (but would be dead in my film) brother? I type this as the sister and brother who is alive (please someone kill him) are drinking and I like him and her, even less. Done now. No more me and no more bad film. Bye

  • Realistic and very enjoyable

Great to see a down-to-earth film with 'real' dialogue and 'real' characters. Very enjoyable with moving and funny moments throughout. Storyline simple but complex at the same time as in real life. Thoroughly recommend!

  • Without doubt, the worst film I have ever seen!

If you ever have the chance to watch this film, don't bother. It is appalling, and brings a whole new dimension to the word 'abysmal'. The plot is graphene thin, the characters are superficial in the extreme, the gratuitous swearing is offensive. I hated it.
