Nothing like Superbad

I have to admit I expected this to be an all-out teen comedy like Superbad, but it is completely different. Cera sticks to his guns with the downbeat nerd role but as for the rest of the film, all the laughs you have probably seen in the trailer. However I thought this film offered something a bit deeper whilst being quirky and weird, I think the best comparison would be to Zach Braff's Garden State (although less depressing). So being from the 18-25 male niche of audience (that loved Garden State) I loved this film, but be warned its not for everyone- Was this review helpful to you?

By a customer , 29 Aug 2012I am not really a great lover of film comedies and was a little apprehensive about sitting down to watch this film.
What a pleasant suprise. The film was a pleasant watch throughout and was different to many 'zany' comedies we are normally subjected to.

Great Film, a feel good movie and a must see!

Sum of parts doesn't provide the goods

Unfortunately for Michael Cera the supporting cast and numerous bit-parts or cameos FAR outway the lead actor's contributions. Zach Galifianakis, Steve Buscemi, Fred Willard, Justin Long and Ray Liotta ALL have more entertaining parts yet play tiny parts by comparrison.
Its not just Cera's fault though. If you appreciate the shoe-gazing adolescence and the obvious quirkiness of the lead character then you might want to get involved in the plot. Fair enough, but the details are delivered by dull dialogue and drawn out over long awkward scenes.
There are odd moments of joy and some amusing scenes where the passage of time is shown in animation. Rooney Mara appears and the tone almost rises up from its maudlin but disappears all too quickly. Its a relief when it finishes.
I'm kinda fed up with actors not acting and Michael Cera's acting only really comes to the forefront when using his alter-ego. This film is painfully slow and fails to build on its minor successes. Even when the opportunity arises for something to actually become engaging the plot trundles on leaving the fun behind.- Was this review helpful to you?
