Costa-Gavras chronicles the overthrow of the democratic government in Greece. When a liberal politician is murdered in an attack during a peace demonstration, the right wing established figures in the military and the police try and hide not only their parts in it, but try to cover up the murder as well. The prosecutor must act as a detective in order to go through the cover up. While historically accurate, it is told as a combination mystery and thriller.

This is one of the iconic political films of the sixties.
It is less of a thriller and more of a documentary by reason of the accurate depiction of the circumstances surrounding the murder of Lambrakis in 1963.
The depiction of the stunted mentality of the military and the police is nothing short of superb The pseudo democracy of Greece during this period is laid bare.
It is certainly worthwhile to read a little about Lambrakis and Greek politics during this period before viewing the film so that you can get the best out of it.
Any public display of the letter Z during the brutal military dicatatorship of 1967-74 was banned. Z was the signifier for the Greek word of zoe - 'he lives'.
