A nonstop giggle from start to finish, this rapier-sharp satire on the fashion industry from director/star Ben Stiller balances hipness and endearing stupidity with expert precision. Based on a persona Stiller created for a fashion awards ceremony in 1996, Derek Zoolander (Stiller) is the king of the male modelling world thanks to the “blue steel” stare that's been the key to his cover-boy fortune. However, when the hilariously self-absorbed oaf loses his title to new boy Hansel (Owen Wilson) and decides to retire, furtive fashion mogul Mugatu (Will Ferrell) comes to his rescue, but only to brainwash the foolish fop into assassinating the Prime Minister of Malaysia and stop his plans to outlaw sweatshops. Brilliantly conceived and executed, Zoolander mercilessly exposes the shallow and bitchy world of haute couture. Side-splitting highlights include the catwalk duel between Zoolander and Hansel — as refereed by David Bowie — and the return home to his butch coal-mining family presided over by Jon Voight. Loaded with fun cameos from celebrities such as Lenny Kravitz, David Duchovny and Winona Ryder, Stiller's family affair — comedian father Jerry plays his shady agent, wife Christine Taylor is an investigative reporter and mother Anne Meara also appears — is a consistently inventive delight that never runs out of steam.

Energetic farce that aims to be a satire on pop culture, but is too toothless for the task.

    Very Funny

You're either going to get this or you're not. I don't think there's an inbetween. Most of it is great but I still think some of it could have been better. Still... Derelite is just genius.

    Entertaining comedy

I rented this movie on a friends recommendation as I'd avoided it cos a) I'm not a big Ben Stiller fan and b) for some unknown reason I thought it was a dodgy spoof of HIghlander (I must have been very misinformed!)

This film is worth watching if for no other reason to watch out for all the famous faces that crop up throughout the film.

Highly amusing in places, and it was nice to see Ben Stiller in a more subdued role!

    Blue Steel

Guys lighten up this film rocks. It is quite possibly the most childish, stupid film I have ever seen but god it's funny. If you are in a bad mood, depressed etc if this doesn't snap you out of it then you need Lithium. I held off for years thinking it would be rubbish before I bought this for £3.99 on sale & it is now one of my favourite films. Ben Stiller has made a classic here from start to finish, this is comedy entertainment at its finest. I will never look at the world of male modeling in the same light again

    Lets have a Walk Off

Very Funny take on the Fashion Industry and Models. Couldn't stop laughing at the stupidity of the whole thing! The P*ss takes are amazing! Don't agree with me 'Let's have a walk off?'. Its one of the 1st colaborations of Stiller, Owen Wilson and Will Farrell! Unmissable!

Seriously though this is an awesome film (as long as you don't mind a bit of slapstick and quite a thin plot) with incredible performances by Stillers Snr and Jnr, Owen Wilson and Will Ferrell. If you enjoy anything in the vein of Adam Sandler / Rob Schneider you'll love this!

    superb..................

my son Matthew loved this dvd. Derek Zoolander (Ben Stiller) is the hottest model in the business, having won the VH-1 'Male Model of the Year' award for the last three years. However, this year he's beaten by the up-and-coming Hansel (Owen Wilson). On top of that, Time magazine has branded him an idiot for certain actions Derek did at the awards show. Derek decides to retire and return to his family, coal miners in New Jersey. This doesn't work either, though.

Meanwhile, the new Prime Minister of Malaysia has promised to raise the minimum wage, ending the fashion industry's source of cheap labour. The secret coalition of fashion designers, that has been behind every major world calamity for the last 200 years, decides that this can't happen.

Whenever they need a stooge to take the blame, they get a model. So Mugatu, the visible head of this group, decides that he has the perfect idiot, - man for the job. He calls Derek out of retirement to headline his new 'Derelicte' line of clothing, and when the Prime Minister is in attendance at the opening, Derek will kill him.

Joined by Matilda Jeffries (Christine Taylor), the reporter that ridiculed his name, and his rival model Hansel, Derek must stop this assassination plan before it can come to fruition. In the meantime, he learns that not everything is about good looks.

Ben Stiller is brilliant as Derek Zoolander, the model with the trim waistline and the brain to match. It was very heart wrenching, when he made his mistake at the Fashion Awards, and saw the subsequent issue of Time magazine. He really does have a good heart, even though he doesn't know how to demonstrate it.

Owen Wilson is marvellous as Hansel. He has the perfect blend of arrogance, talent, and the ability to change his mind when necessary. But like Derek, he's a bit stupid. Wilson pulls it off with flair, and his reconciliation scene with Derek is comical. You alternately laugh at him, hate him, and then love him, all in the space of one movie.

The villains are great also. Will Ferrell chews is superb as Mugatu. Milla Jovavich plays the heavy in this film, and does it with ease. Jerry Stiller plays Maury, Derek's manager - he is very funny. All of them add the perfect blend to the mix, making the outcome just about perfect.

There are a lot of shots taken at the fashion industry, but most of the models appear to realize that it's all in jest, because they make cameos in the movie. Numerous other Hollywood stars make cameos as well, such as David Duchovny and Gary Shandling.

This film is well worth renting out.

    Hilarious Stuff

Highly enjoyable comedy with the ever excellent duo Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson as rival models caught up in a evil plan concocted by the leaders of the fashion world to prevent the ending of child labour. There are plenty of laughs along the way and the film is also a visual feast with a great soundtrack to boot. Will Ferrell is also very funny as the meglo-maniacal Mugato and I have to say this film was a very pleasant suprise.

    One trick pony

I was recommended to watch this film by a friend who described it as 'hilarious'.

Whilst it was mildly amusing at times it relied on you finding the premise of an idiotic male model amusing enough to watch for the entirity of the film.

It's funny for the first ten mins perhaps but personally I expected more. There are much funnier films out there - rent them instead.

    Holding a mirror to fashion!

If there ever was a film to make you want to join the fashion industry this is it! From the opening scenes you will struggle not to continue smiling until the final scene. The only respite will be frequent interruptions of very loud and undignified laughter!

The film is littered with critique and satire of the fashion industry from ‘The look’ to the ‘walkoff’. Once you have sampled Ben Stiller in his myriad of looks ‘Blue Steel’ and ‘Magnum’ to name but two you will fully appreciate the dedication and effort of the models on the catwalks of the Milan, Paris and London. Either that or continue to watch the Fashion TV channel for amusement while the adverts are on!

One of Ben Stiller’s finest films. If you are feeling down step into your spandex suit, strap on a bandanna and polish those gold earrings and join the fashion guru of the world…Derek Zoolander!

    Really, really, really funny!

Some people just don't get this film, which is a shame because if you can get subtle humour and pick-up on what the writers are poking fun at, it's hillarious with a capital H! I thought it was laugh-out-loud funny and love anything with Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson (devoted fan) so it's 'really, really, really' one for my collection!
