Marvellously emotive and perfectly cast film version of Nikos Kazantzakis's novel about the salt-of-the-earth peasant who teaches an uptight Englishman the secret of life. As Zorba, Anthony Quinn plays the part of a lifetime, so much so that the role greatly impinged on the actor both in real life and in all his movies ever since. Also adding to the film's particular and unusual grace are wonderful Oscar-winning black-and-white photography by Walter Lassally, a haunting Mikis Theodorakis score — since responsible for a zillion pieces of smashed crockery in Greek restaurants worldwide — and a glowingly warm portrayal (also Oscar-rewarded) by Lila Kedrova as an aged prostitute. It's a shade too long for its own good, though.
A mainly enjoyable character study of a larger-than-life character, this film made famous by its music does not really hang together dramatically and has several melodramatic excrescences.
First of all, I must say that I am biased as I love Greece and the Greek people.
Zorba is a classic, filmed in and around Hania in 1964.
It gives a wonderful insight into village life 40 years ago - although the hounding and murder of the beautiful widow (Irene Papas) and the pillaging of the Ritz Hotel after the death of Madame Hortense were disturbing.
Anthony Quinn gives a masterly performance as the happy go lucky Zorba - anyone who goes to Greece regularly will recognize many endearing (and some annoying) Greek characteristics.
Alan Bates plays a typical Englishman abroad, who mellows after his time spent in Greece.
One of the scenes with Zorba and Mme Hortense was a little long winded and tedious, but all in all a truly masterful Classic Film that needs to be revisited and enjoyed every so often.
Very enjoyable with intoxicating performances. A welcome tonic from Hollywood trash!
