Zorba The Greek

Michael Cacoyannis's powerful film starring Anthony Quinn garnered seven Academy Award nominations including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor. On the Greek isle of Crete, Basil (Alan Bates), a shy, inhibited writer from England is befriended by Zorba, a boisterous, gregarious peasant with an astonishing love for life. When Zorba agrees to work at Basil's recently inherited abandoned mine, it is the beginning of a lesson for the young man as he gradually moves from an observer of the world to a participant.

      A mainly enjoyable character study of a larger-than-life character, this film made famous by its music does not really hang together dramatically and has several melodramatic excrescences.

      A CLASSIC - LOVED IT

      First of all, I must say that I am biased as I love Greece and the Greek people.

      Zorba is a classic, filmed in and around Hania in 1964.

    Antonio Banderas is in negotiations to return to Broadway next year (11) in a new production of Zorba The Greek. The Mask of Zorro star, who won acclaim as the lead star of musical Nine in 2003, expressed his desire to return to the stage last summer (09).
