    [Highly rated reviewer]

Katsuhiro Otomo may never do better than Akira. It took years before an anime had the impact that Akira had, Princess Mononoke and the other Studio Ghibli films, it left such a mark that Otomo's next projects were eagely awaited but nothing he has done since has lived up to Akira. Memories is lightweight. Otomo's own piece is a take on George Orwell's '1984' and is to underdeveloped to do it justice. The other two films are passerbal but average. Otomo's book 'Domu' showed he could still portray desperate, touching, funny humanity within a large operetic scale but Memories only scratches the surface of his imagination.

  • Is it just me, or did anyone else get this issue?

I'm a huge fan of anime, and to me, Japanese dialogue with English subtitles is the way to go. But with this one - and I don't think I'm an idiot, although others may disagree - try as I could, no matter what I attempted with screen settings, subtitle settings etc, it just wouldn't cooperate. It seemed as though only a third to a half of the dialogue was coming up in the subs, so I only had a 'sort of' idea of what the hell was going on, and gave up mid-way through the second episode. Shame, I'd have liked to watch it properly.

Overall uninspired by this DVD. 3 shorts which left me wondering at many points what was the point. There is much better anime out there and definately not for someone who wants an intro into these types of films.

Memories is a collection of three fantastic short stories. Watch out for Stink Bomb inparticular, it had me in stitches every time I watched it.

In a word 'excellent'. Memories contains 3 stories of pure anime weirdness. I found the 1st a little bit spooky, the 2nd just odd and the 3rd utterly brilliant. I found nothing wrong with all 3.

Three great animes, grouped together as one film for cinema release.

The first, Magnetic Rose, is the best, having a creepy, surreal atmosphere that blurs the distinction between reality and holograms; is it just a mad computer, or are there really ghosts?

The second, Stink Bomb, is a light-hearted look at chemical warfare; a blend of comedy and horror that works far better than any I can remember seeing.

The third, Cannon Fodder, is reminiscent of the pointless war described in Orwell's 1984. Cleverly understated, this has a delayed punch, at first seeming very slight, but as you think more about it, you realise it is horribly similar to recent real events.

Another reviewer compared this unfavourably with Akira; can't see why, it's completely different. It's really good in its own right. Might as well compare Christmas pudding with roast beef.
