    [Highly rated reviewer]

This film stays true to original ending of 'I Am Legend' the 1954 science fiction novel by Richard Matheson, used/gang r*ped for the latest remake with Will Smith.

Sadly the latter decides to go the post 9/11 allllll American Hero route and completely disregard the point of the story..Which is... *SPOILER*.... That he is a 'legend' due to the fact that the new vampire society view HIM as the monster/villain of the story due to his treatment of their people. These days calling the protagonist a terrorist and murder I assume wont sit well with U.S foreign policy…

    Hollywood! Stop raping literature!

  • Vincent is brilliantly miscast

Surprised I've never seen this before - being a major Vincent Price fan. He's brilliantly miscast as the last survivor in a world populated by zombies, but his camp voice over just adds to the retro appeal of this film. Actually quite ahead of its time, and strangely ignored as a pioneer in the zombie genre. @matthewbatham

Vincent on form, hammy but in a tongue in cheek way, his performance makes this film, along with the excellent screenplay, which adheres closely to Matheson's horror classic. Not at all scary by today's standards, but well worth a watch nonetheless.

  • Has not aged well.

It's an interesting film, but it really shows its age. No longer really watchable from my perspective. Although Vincent is a quality actor, the plot and acting in this are too amateur.

  • the last man you'd expect

despite my soft spot for vincent price i did not have high hopes for this film. i imagined it would be one of his cheaper ham-sandwiches, along the lines of dr goldfoot and the bikini machine. and yet... i was pleasantly surprised. although no charlton heston in the omega man or even will smith in i am legend, price manages to play a convincingly heroic 'last man on earth.' i admit that the vampires are about as scary as broccoli but that is not really the point here, or indeed in matheson's novel in general. what is terrifying is the idea that you are completely alone in a dead world, eking out a bare existence during the day and haunted by your memories at night. the vampires are merely the cause of the true horror of loneliness and existential despair. price manages for the most part to play it straight and keeps the campiness to a minimum. and when his dead wife returns from the grave it is pure homage to all those necrophiliac poe characters he would play for roger corman. all in all a surprisingly effective and moving film

  • Best film ever....... Possible.

Ok, possible not the world best financed film, but well acted, and well filmed.

Its a very true version of the book, and for that I am grateful.

Vincent Price, was a surprise choice for the film, but it seems he was there to act not for the cheque.

Ok it was filmed in Italy, not America, and its obvious when you watch it, but its easily forgiven.

Even better, makes the abomination of an actor Will Smith's version what it is, possible the worse film ever.

Take my advice watch this film, then own it. You won't go wrong.

Then buy the Will Smith version and burn it, and send it to MR Smith with a letter simple saying `NO`
