(20)a really poor adaptation of a cracking book
By davidginsberg (56 reviews) from London , 30 Jan 2013Very disappointed with this as I read the Georges Simenon book it is based on at university. The book tells the story of a loner and voyeur who gets drawn into a murder investigation. It is a really good story and expertly written by Simenon. Unfortunatly the person who made this had seen one too many Peter Greenaway films so instead of a psychological thriller we get The voyeur, his prey, her bloke, the murder with lots of use of bright colours and over long takes. It is really poor and ruins the story. The update it to 1980s Paris so you get none of the seediness of the book. Peter Greenaway has a lot to answer for!- Was this review helpful to you?

Thoughtful, interesting.
By severncityboy (33 reviews) from Worcester , 29 Sep 2011Very moving story, well-paced, well-acted.
Very adult, in a good way, in that it allows characters to develop and form the basis of a rather compelling film.- Was this review helpful to you?

Watching the watcher is weird stuff.
By a customer , 29 Aug 2011Still can't decide how much I liked this film. The acting was good but it's a spooky storyline of voyeurism that is unsettling.- Was this review helpful to you?

Haunting and unrelentingly sad
By a customer , 26 Jun 2011I took a few days to write the review and although the film didn't make a huge impact at first (it is quite short and rather distant in tone) I'm struck by the fact that it is haunting me - it is enigmatic, under-stated and not something to watch if you're in a Walt Disney sort of mood. The 'feel' of 1960s Paris seems beautifully captured by me - I first went there in the early 1970s and not much had changed - and the acting and direction are credible, low-key. Prepare yourself for a sad evening though.- Was this review helpful to you?

Utterly Zzzzzzz.......
By a customer from Bradford-on-Avon , 13 Mar 2011With all due respect to the hundreds of reviewers who awarded this Gallic snore-fest four stars or more, I have to say that this truly gives French film-making a bad name.We found it improbable, unconvincingly performed, predictable and edited with a pair of blunt garden shears: even as people who regularly watch French 'art' cinema, we could barely suppress yelling, 'get on with it!'. Rarely have I yearned so deeply for a car chase, a direct conversation or just something other than innumerable shots of people staring through windows!- Was this review helpful to you?
