While this game is good in its own right, I am not excited about where they are taking the franchise. As a huge Gears of War fan, I was devastated to pick up this disc, the campaign was so disappointing compared to the original trilogy, The multi-player had only 4 game-modes & my favourite mode, Horde Mode is completely gone. The game has its perks like great graphic & good game-play mechanics, however it seems to have gone from good to better to awesome then straight back down to good with this game. Worth a rent, but not worth buying. Please bear in mind i am a hardcore Gears of war fan & the review is based off my opinions on the game, you may enjoy it more than the original trilogy.

very poor - the 'chapters' and voice over make it very disjointed, just doesn't flow like gears - definitely feels like 2nd division EPIC

  • Uninspired but still Gears, Serviceable Cover Shooter

The Gears Franchise continues to wane as it ages. While the core mechanics and game play are still good, there is absolutely NOTHING new here and that is the main problem. Everything you saw rehashed in Gears 3, you see again here, with even less variety. If you liked Gears, there is still enough here to make it an entertaining blast through and the story keeps the action moving but nothing else and it follows a very predictable path (as you might expect for a prequel). A lot of the inspiration for this game seems to have been hoarde mode multiplayer as almost every section is either capture an objective or defend a point. This is fun but does get old, particularly by the end. At this point in the franchise they really needed to mix things up and add some new mechanics to freshen things up but they have not done any of that and so you have a serviceable but forgettable game that adds nothing but can keep you entertained for a weekend.

If you are a gow fan but was put off by alot of the changes they made for this prequel just play it its still gears at its core yes there are some new concepts like being able to jump off buildings and just spawning in multiplayer with one primary weapon but its still great i wont be going back to gears 1,2 or 3 anytime soon

This is by far the worst Gears ever made, the story line didn't flow like the others and there was too many stopping points throughout the campaign. To be honest i got bored after the first hour

I found this to be quite boring, and massively repetitive. I sent it back after a few hours play. Certainly one to rent.
