Apparently this is a remake of Ace combat 2 on the Ps1, though I couldnt say. What I can say is that this game, which quietly released on the 3DS late last year with almost no fanfare, is an excellent Ace Combat game with a few mystifying flaws and omissions.
Mechanically, the game is fantastic. With the controls set to 'classic' the game feels like a true ace combat title as you pilot your craft skillfully, managing engine speed and high-g-turns to avoid stalling. Missions where you fly down a tight ravine are a particular joy once you get skilled at controlling the plane.
The ace combat games have never been about realism though, and this one is no exception. New to this game is the ability to perform an 'advanced maneuver' - when you fly near an enemy plane a gauge in the corner of the screen fills. wait for it to fully charge and press the Y button and youll be instantly plopped behind the enemy plane. While that may sound like it makes the game too easy in fact many enemy planes are equipped with countermeasures. To clarify this is NOT the same as the DFM system in ace combat assault horizon on 360/ps3. This just places you behind the enemy and returns control to you.
The truly excellent new addition is the missile dodge system. As a missile approaches youre given s plit second to tap the Y button and pull the stick in the direction indicated by an arrow before it hits. This is a much better system than in other ace combat games, where you simply turn like crazy and hope for the best (plus it looks incredibly cool as you fly through an enemy formation dodging missiles like crazy).
So this AC game is incredibly fun to play. The only issue is the short length of the campaign (5 hours, 10 if you choose to play twice to experience two branching paths) and the complete lack of multiplayer. COnsidering the two PSP entries in the series had beefy campaigns and the second had online multiplayer too this is a major disappointment. A few special and survival missions round out the package but the experience will be over all to soon. Unlocking all the planes might be an option for diehards but will result in a lot of tedious mission grinding for credits.
While that five hour campaign lasts its fantastic, with a great mix of ace battles, dogfights and ground and sea attack missions. Its just a shame there isnt more of it!
I eagerly await the next ace combat game on 3DS with a longer campaign and (hopefully) online multiplayer.- Was this review helpful to you?
