Battle Fatigue
By DriversHigh (4 reviews) from Sheffield , 23 Apr 2009[Highly rated reviewer]
Whilst we wait for Blaz Blu, Arc System's first 2D fighter since Guilty Gear XX: Reload Accent Core Plus Extra II Turbo (or whatever minor update they feel passes for a full price game) to appear on the 360 and PS3, I thought I'd try Battle Fantasia. Despite the quality of the developers behind it, I just wasn't convinced by this game's ability to go toe to toe with the great console beat 'em ups.
The controls are ok, standard 4 buttons for attack, charge/quarter circle motions, bit more fiddly for the super special moves. Heat gauge is this game's USP, where you expend a super special gauge for a temporary power boost and modified special moves/abilities. Combos are possible to string together, but after Street Fighter IV's ease of use, it feels like a tiny step back.
The characters are a standard mix of medieval folklore gone East, with child knights, gunslingers and cat-girl waiters, all fairly heavy on the anime styling, helped by the game's sound being Japanese. Personal opinion here, but the style is interesting, though a few more characters would always be nice.
Overall, it's a servicable 3D 2D fighter, with standard game modes. It's just lacking the sharpness, depth and control precision of Guilty Gear, KoF (both 2D and 3D versions) and Street Fighter IV. Stick with them until Tekken 6, KoF 12 and BlazBlu turn up.- Was this review helpful to you?

(5)Too much text, not enough action.
By MiniNinja (16 reviews) from Warrington , 12 Apr 2012Wasn't really sure what to expect from this game but it had a cute cover so i thought I'd give it a go. What's that saying about never judging a book by it's cover?! Well, lesson learnt, that applies to games too!
Far, far too much text to read initially, I was bored before I even had to press a button. Then it's basically a constant cycle of 'read some text - have a fight - read more text (yawn) - have another fight'.- Was this review helpful to you?

...what?
By Paulverine (2 reviews) from Bristol , 15 Jun 2009While the character models are detailed and colourful, the game took an hour of my life that I really want back. There's a stereotype that follows Japanese games made famous by the Simpsons' episode of the wolves that shoot spiderwebs, which is that all Japanese games must involve at least one midget, one robot, one big guy, one handsome man and a girl a rack so big you're going to need a bigger TV. It's not so tiring in games like Final Fantasy; that sort of genre has depth and a story to follow. Battle Fantasia includes a Pirate, some sort of marsupial in a wizard costume and a bunch of other wtf-ites competing for some kind of trophy.
If you're immortal and desperately need to occupy your excruciatingly long life, rent it. If you're a human being, don't waste five minutes with this. Rent Tekken. Or DC v Mortal Kombat. Anything but this.- Was this review helpful to you?
