When people describe games with phrases like 'genre-busting', it usually indicates that a developer has made a concerted effort to make a statement and create a footprint on the gaming landscape. It's a little tempting to use that phrase to describe the Rhythm Heaven series, but really what's happened there is the development team has just sort of absent-mindedly wandered off in its own direction, with little thought or consideration. And that, really, is the strange joy of Beat the Beat: Rhythm Paradise, the latest game in the series. The game follows up on the weirdness of Rhythm Tengoku on the Game Boy Advance and Rhythm Heaven on the DS, the game presents a series of rhythm-based mini-games to an odd, eclectic set of animations. You might be flying ninja rabbits through the air, commanding a samurai battling shadow demons or stopping shooting peas with a fork it's almost impossible to give a good taste of the subjects offered up, because they're that random. What we can tell you is that getting them right always demands on taking cues from the audio and correctly pressing either A or B on the Wii Remote. It sounds straightforward, but things can get fiendish. The music is also pretty eclectic, ranging from bossa nova right through to industrial pop. There are 50 mini-games in total, with the option to test your skills against a friend further rounding the game out.

Really fun, addictive game, simple to play but fun for all ages. Similar to Wario smooth moves with mini game randomness.
