Fun game, with its complications.
By Chaocontrol6 (2 reviews) , 29 Jan 2012This game was something that I bought because I am a huge fan of board games and when you mix Super Mario with Dragonquest I certainly thought you couldn't go far wrong.
And I was not disappointed, to a degree. There are a huge range of boards to select from both the Super Mario and Dragonquest boards, so there is certainly enough to keep you going. The graphics are quite nice too, with a large range of playable characters to choose from, and you can use your own Mii too, which can be customized as you progress through the tour to wear their own outfit too!
The gameplay itself is complicated. Think of Monopoly (In the sense of owning properties and paying rent for landing on others, however in this case it's called 'shopping') and adding a range of different special spaces to land on and the ability to improve on your buildings. If you throw in the Standard Rules over the Easy Rules, you also get to play with the stock market depending on the district of the properties, what can be improved on them and whether they are being well invested in or not.
The only downfalls I have had so far is that it sometimes feels impossibly difficult on the Tour Mode, no matter whether you are facing easy, medium or hard opponents. So far I am yet to win a single game out of the many that I have tried, and not even reached 2nd place either. You get the frustrating feeling that the game is geared in favour of the computers as they are throwing high rolls and collecting promotions whereas you are throwing 1s or 2s and landing on a lot of their properties that have been very well built on and are charging a lot of money. It's the balance of challenge and frustration, and I do not think the game has quite achieved that. Or perhaps I need more practice...
The only other critique that I have with the game is that none of the characters whatsoever actually make noises (eg Mario's 'Woohoo!' noise, and stuff like that). There are textboxes of the characters speaking to each other but that is not the same. Also the gameplay can be slow and painful, so if you want to get on with the game, go into the 'Options' and change the game speed to 'Blur' and the characters speeches to either 'Fast' or 'Off' if you are not bothered about them at all.
Anyway, a game I would recommend if you are a big fan of Monopoly and are up for a much bigger challenge than simply buying Mayfair and charging £2000 rent after placing a hotel on it!- Was this review helpful to you?
