Scarier than zombies lunch box

I usually take the hype with a pinch of salt when it comes to video games, I've been disapointed so many times in recent history by the likes of Bioshock and Halo 3 that any game given more coverage than the average mini game collection leaves me with a sense of mistrust general scepticism.
Well for once I wasn't right, Dead Space really is scary and not in a shock value 'omg the mob just spawned behind me' Doom kind of scary I mean this game really sets the mood.
Sure there are some times when you think there's going to be a set piece horror event and it comes out just how you imagined it, but generally this game has atmosphere you could cut with an industrial saw (literally).
I've seen reviews complain about a lack of multiplayer or bad melee combat (not that you'd ever want to be in melee range of a 10 foot tall, blade armed space zombie) but I really don't think either of those points matter.
Firstly because I''ve not missed anything yet when trying to break/hit/stomp it and secondly because Multiplayer would have been tacked on at the end and taken time away from the real reason this game was made.
To scare the living crap out of you.
It's been a long time since a group of developers sat down and said 'right we're gonna make this scary' and actually pulled it off but these guys have done it well.
The sound, the artwork, the enemies, the dynamic music, the lighting, the pacing, the controls (bad controls can pull you out of a games atmosphere faster than a plasma blast to the groin), The feeling that you're never quite safe, just everything. They got it all right and I want to applaud them.
Buy this game, turn the lights off, play it alone... and then wish you didn't.- Was this review helpful to you?

Good idea, poorly executed
By a customer , 25 Nov 2011The concept is good, as is the atmosphere created by the visuals. But unfortunately it's very poorly executed. the 3rd person camera and player movement is clunky and slow. The use of a HuD is poor too. Didn't finish it before sending it back. Could have been done so much better.- Was this review helpful to you?

Next gen Doom? Hmmm...

Yeah sure, good graphics, fairly smooth controls and some clever zero-g gimmicks are what saves this, because the plot is just a re-hashed update of doom 3 mind you nobody can really do a sci-fi space horror without falling short of their classic.- Was this review helpful to you?

Resi evil in space....

OMG...This game crapped the life out of me. Great story to boot....fantastic twist in the tail. I advise playing late at night in total darkness....oh, and if you can, buy some turtle beaches...you wont regret them with this horrifing game. every time my phone vibrated on my lap or the cat slightly brushed my legs, i jumped out of my skin.
