    [Highly rated reviewer]

I rented this expecting a couple hours worth of tedious but gratifying hack and slash, chasing the same old objectives with nothing but a rapidly rising killcount. How wrong was I.

Koei have completely reinvented the series with this one, including proper, satisfying RPG elements in a switch from the tried and tested grasscutting of the older games. Of course the PSP couldn't handle double figures of enemies on screen, especially with the impressive graphics on Strikeforce, so they've done more than compromise, they've changed Dynasty, definitely for the better.

This plays more like an MMORPG than anything else on a console, especially with the multiplayer setup. The downside of this is that its incredibly hard to solo your way through the story, requiring plenty of grinding and skill to beat some of the diverse and incredibly challenging boss battles. Despite this, it is possible, and even grinding for cash, materials and exp. for your surprisingly customisable characters provides deep and addictive gameplay. It plays like Crouching Tiger and all the other unbelievable modern Martial Arts flicks, with vivid colours, duels 100 feet in the air, jumping between rooftops being ganged up on by as many as 4 commanders at once. Battles can feel more like dogfighting on acid than the simple 2-button swordfights in previous titles.

I've not tried the multiplayer features, but I do know its possible to beat the game alone, if you're up for an intense challenge. On your own its tough as Chinese nails, but with friends I reckon it'd be in a league of its own.
