    [Highly rated reviewer]

Played this game round a relatives house in the US. The first thing that hit's you when you fire up Eternal Sonata is the rich, vibrant graphics that look like overexaggerated manga which isn't a bad thing. The other is the intricate storyline which is based on classical music. The story is based around the dreams of a musical composer Chopin, and the interesting characters and environments within what i would call a wonderfully designed Japanese Role-Playing Game. This game is not for those who don't like turn-based or Japanese games, since the game uses both these mechanics. However, almost everyone will love the rich presentation, and it should be appreciated the amount of effort the developers put into the game. The combat system is brilliant with lots of great animations and sounds, creating a visual treat for the eyes and ears. The only drawback from this being a 5 Star video game, is that there are too many unnecessary dead ends. The player will find themselves reaching a dead end with no hint of it. The game by RPG standards is pretty linear meaning there is'nt much leeway for exploration compared to heavyweights like Final Fantasy and Blue Dragon. Hope this review helped.

  • Magical RPG – Really Enjoyed

This is a truly magical RPG and one of the better ones available on the xbox. The turn based combat system works very well (much like Tales of Vesperia). The storyline is superb and very educational too as you get to learn about the life of Chopin!!

Fun, light hearted and addictive are the best three words to describe this game. If you love RPG’s, then this is a must.

I had read the reviews for this game in the magazines and it appealed to me along with the manga style graphics, so i thought i would rent it out. This is my first console RPG and i thought it would be on the light side of gameplay, but there is alot of depth to the story and the fighting system.

I am thankful that you can avoid monsters if you need to in many cases but this does make you pretty weak when fighting the inevitable bosses. For that reason you have to level up as you go through the game through many, many fights. I would have wished for more item shops and places to upgrade and spend upgrade points as i saw fit to develop the characters into individual styles but this system does not exist in the game.

The game is pretty linear and i think it is lazy of the developer to not let the player complete the game on the first play through, instead you have to play through the game a second time to collect all the score pieces, most of the score pieces are hard to find in the first place, there are a number of websites which list the location of these but ultimately i could not be bothered.

A map would have been handy in the game allowing you to travel from one place to another quickly to complete sub quests. I would give the game a 6/10 as it tries very hard to be good at everything but ultimately trips in quite a few places. Also skip the really long and boring cutscenes especially at the start (10minutes of scenes before you even start the game!) unless you have loads of time to kill.

Ok so I rented this game as the reviews seemed pretty good. I trusted them. Yes the graphics are Japanese Manga style and look beautiful I guess, if they appeal to you.

But that was not enough to make up for all the rest of the flaws. This game clearly needed more time to be completed and for that I am really dissapointed.

The Dialogue is so long and boring with so many stupid pauses.

The Characters don't show emotions and stand motionless with their arms to their sides (the same through the entire game).

Fighting gets terribly boring after about 4 hours of playing (same old repetitive fighting) and you don't enjoy the fighting. You keep running into enemies whilst you're quickly trying to complete a mission and be done with the game.

No offense to anyone who does follow turn based, slow RPGs with no action. But this game was terribly dissapointing.

I would not recommend this game to anyone who likes fun and likes fast paced games with violence etc... and this is non existent in the game.

As the french say J'ai un mal de tete. The game was so bad and slow that it gave me a headache. I do not recommend.
