So nearly great, let down by bizarre control options
By DisasterArea (2 reviews) , 10 Jan 2012[Highly rated reviewer]
This is a solidly playable game, let down by a totally avoidable problem.
The button mapping options are, frankly, daft. KERS and DRS cannot be mapped to the shoulder buttons, and are instead on two of the four main buttons, next to the throttle and brakes; KERS can be deployed (X button) without too many contortions but using DRS (Y button) while keeping the throttle pinned (on the A button) and without touching the brake (B button) is far too awkward. Switch to the button mapping with the throttle and brakes on the shoulder buttons and frankly that's uncomfortable too, and KERS and DRS remain on the same buttons, so using them both without accidental gear changes is also a real pain.
The AI could also use some work as they veer all over the track, apparently oblivious to you especially when you're lapping them. This had the potential to be a great game, the 3D effect works well, especially in the 'TV Pod' camera mode; bizarrely for a studio as well-established as Codemasters (some of us are old enough to remember Sinclair tapes with their old logo) this game feels unpolished and slightly slapdash as these basic mistakes were allowed to remain in a finished product.
Playable but flawed, I hope they fix these issues for F1 2012.- Was this review helpful to you?
