You've never had a fight like this. Sure, Fairytale Fights sounds like the name of a cutesy kids' game aimed at tempting grannies to spend a few pounds on a Christmas gift for their wee little grandkids, but it's far from it. You can tell this isn't an adventure game for youngsters when one of the opening screens informs you that the game has been built using Epic games' Unreal 3 Engine, but in case you were in any doubt it's a game about fairytale characters dismembering each other.
Yes, that's right, fairytale dismemberment. It's a hack 'n' slash beat 'em up featuring all your favourite bedtime stories. You start off by picking a character whose best days are behind them, such as Jack (of beanstalk fame), Snow White, Little Red or the (naked) Emporer. With your character picked and your preferences set it's off to save the fairytale world from fairytale threats. It seems like a noble goal, but it turns out the road to saving the world is slick with fairytale blood. This game is NOT for the faint of heart. As you pummel and hack your way through the levels you'll make them positively wet with the red stuff wet enough that you can actually skid through it if you so choose.
During combat you can either use your fists or any of the weapons that are liberally scattered across the levels. Playlogic has taken a novel approach to the control system rather than bringing the usual frantic button mashing into play, you'll find that you control combat using the right analogue stick.
This all comes with a multiplayer mode that gives you the option to hack and slash your way to victory either with or against friends.
There's never been a scarier time to be a Gingerbread Man.
