How much you like this game will depend on how much you like Van Halen, and the Guitar Hero style of games. If you like them both, then this is a good title, but still falls short of greatness. If you aren't a fan of Van Halen, then this is at best worth renting.
I played through the game on each instrument, and found that after playing career mode a few times I couldn't face playing more Van Halen songs. Luckily, the setlist is split between Van Halen and Guest Artists, of which some of the Guest Artist songs are decent to play.
Aside from career mode, there really isn't much on offer here. The online game mode is deserted, so there is virtually no chance of finding players to play with online, let alone getting together 4 players for some of the achievements.
I have given this game its rating based on if you like Van Halen. Whether you like Van Halen or not, this game is only worth a rent, as it doesn't have enough content to keep you coming back to it.- Was this review helpful to you?

Van Halen
By turismo (4 reviews) from Stoke-on-Trent , 12 Mar 2010The Guitar Hero money train keeps a rollin'
Unfortunately this title is a poor addition to the series, with nothing to hold experienced players, and very little to excite old hands. This formula is becoming very tired indeed with few if any improvements. This title is a step backwards for me, and only for hard core Van Halen fans. It certainly is difficult so those players that beat songs like fire and flames may enjoy the challenge, but for me this is a miss. Go for GH Metallica, or Rock Band instead- Was this review helpful to you?

Only for die hard fans...
By ChristophBull (5 reviews) from Huddersfield , 24 Feb 2010I'm very glad I didn't buy this game outright as it's definitely not worth paying full price for. It has all the classic Van Halen songs and tracks by other bands on there too but that's about it. The other bands on there are mostly bands that I would never have associated with Van Halen, it seems a bit silly for some of them to be on there i.e. Blink 182 and JimmyEatWorld. There's no real story to the game. I know it's a guitar hero game but you'd think with it being based on Van Halen it would at least try to follow their career or something and maybe have venues where they've played and information about the band's career but there's nothing really. It's basically just a list of songs and you go through them, unlocking more as you go. The extras for each song comprise of lyrics or song facts, nothing special.
I would recommend this only to either die hard Van Halen fans or die hard Guitar Hero fans. There are much better Guitar Hero games with much better tracks on them.- Was this review helpful to you?
