    [Highly rated reviewer]

Although not a fan of the original Half-Life (too much crawling through tunnels killing aliens that resembled roast chickens for my liking) I decided to give this sequel a try based on its rep as a PC title.

This game has raised the bar for excellence among XBox shooters. Frequently stunning locations, a sense of paranoia as the oppressive 'Civil Protection Team' hunt you down and a real sense of trying to survive as part of an underground resistence movement in a dystopian future where big brother is not only watching but also all too ready to silence dissenters combine to form an impressive whole.

There are lengthy sections that take place driving various vehicles and a generous amount that involve simply running overland and then investigating any buildings along the way. If the standard image of an FPS is of a game that involves endless, claustrophic tunnels and corridors, then Half-Life 2 must be applauded for throwing in a variety of environments, including a few hours spent travelling along waterways.

As an owner of both an XBox and a PS2 with around 25 games in total, many of which I've yet to play, I have to say that I'm currently playing the best game on each console from those that I own. This is the Xbox title, and the PS2 game is Resident Evil 4.

A stunning achievement that is certain to keep players gripped.

  • What a great game!

I’m always a bit weary when taking on the old Xbox games on the 360 (too many experiences of dated graphics and ‘story lines’), but this one is right up there with the best.

I am a big fan of the Halo series and I would rank Half-Life 2 along with it for gameplay and ‘plot’. There is tight space and out in the open action throughout and you need to be aware of what is going on all around you. Dealing with different enemies requires different tactics (not always blast your way through).

If you haven’t played it and you like shooter / adventure games, get it, you won’t be disappointed.

    I'm loving this game.

It's inspired me to play more RPG's especially first person.

I think the dynamics are incredible not to mention the A.I.

I'm a first person Phanatic so believe me when i say this is a game to explore.

It wont disappoint you if ur looking for twisted plots and scary moments that catch you off guard.

Watch out for the things that hang from the ceiling lmbao.

As an aspiring games designer, I experienced Half-Life 2 much later than I should. Despite that, it's easy to see why this title gained such critical acclaim. The cocktail of player skill, environment interaction, narratological immersion guided by intuitive level design makes this game the yardstick for subsequent games. The player is challenged from Point Insertion to Dark Matter, almost subconciously honing their skills, while all the time being engaged in a story which accomodates appropriate pace towards an achievable goal. If it weren't for the checkpoints and mission titles, the action would be utterly seemless. Too often, players rely on and exploit game mechanics to get by. For Half Life 2, that is a requirement of gameplay. Half Life 2 constantly questions the player's innovitive abilities to study and manipulate their environment. New possibilities arrise as new weapons are introduced, particularly the Gravity Gun. It'e Game Design genius!

There is so much to love with half life 2: the graphics, the phisicys and last but not least the story.

Right from the start you realise your in a highly controlled city (city 17) were there is always eyes watching and monitoring what you do, until they deem you a 'problem' and soon on in the game your running for your life.

The game takes off from there and it never gets low or boring there is always somthing new around the courner ready to help or hinder you.

The puzzle aspect of the game is also very clever way of letting you take time and think about what your doing without taking control away from the player EVER, even in very important scenes that advance the story you can do whatever you want if you feel you dont want to listen dont

Also the way half life bring you out of the standard corridor fps is amazing not only dose it give you massive areas to explore it makes it feel like a living breathing world. and one that you will enjoy being a part of for sometime to come.

You will never come across a game (at this point in time) where there so much emphasis on physics. Image being chased by a nuch of soldiers only to pick up a cooker with the gravity gun and place it behind the door so they cant get in, or even then go to the top of that building and drop a bed frame on their head. There is a constant story ongoing with no cut scenes, when something big happens you choose where to look and what to do. The levels are different all the time also and the plot is is deep, it's good to play it through twice to notice all of the plot. I guarentee you will not find a more amazing FPS.
