Combat classic

Although it's a few years old now and theoretically eclipsed by Halo 2, the original has tons of milage in it. The graphics are still beautiful (paricularly in the earlier levels) and the story compelling.
But for me what really sets this game apart is 1) the assault rifle - there's something very dilinquent and thrilling emptying a magazine into one of the elites - much better than the Battle rifle in H2, with a better 'feel'. Secondly, if you play it on the higher difficulty settings it plays much more like a tactical shooter where stealth, timing and weapon selection as well as battlecraft come into it.
For example, when on one of the earlier levels and I couldn't fight my way out alone, I went back down, picked up the warthog (and therefore a few troops) drove it almost sideways up the mountain (yes it can be done!) and outwitted the opposition.
The only criticism is the levels fighting the flood are a little tedious and should have been made slightly shorter. Other than that, this is one game which should probably be in your collection.- Was this review helpful to you?

(3)The best game - ever.
By a customer from Devon , 21 Mar 2010Halo is the game that got me into gaming and the reason I bought an Xbox. I've played many games since, but nothing comes even remotely close to this. Things may have moved on in terms of graphics and speed, but this game still rates perfection because of it's beautifully balanced and finely tuned controls, which even part-time gamers can quickly master and enjoy. Every movement is smooth and precise, the graphics are clear and exciting, and you don't need a degree in geek to understand this game. It is simple, yet in legendary mode is also a real test of skill and endurance . Halo 2 was a total disaster, wiping out all the good work done in the original - messy, dark, confusing graphics and lifeless controls. I didn't bother after that. For the ultimate game, the perfect 100%, 10 out of 10, simply the best, look no further. This game is the greatest ever, and I seriously doubt it will ever be bettered.- Was this review helpful to you?
