Entertaining and boring at the same time....

It's hard to review this game since I got mixed feelings about it.
Haven has an extremely varied gameplay. It keeps you guessing all the way about what you're gonna have to do next, which is very exciting. At the same time though, it doesn't seem to explore any of the ideas it presents too well, not to mention that it doesn't give you any instructions of what or how to do it so you might end up feeling a bit frustrated as you advance in the game but still feel like you don't know much about it.
And frustration is really Haven's biggest enemy. The character's main weapon is a very awkward yo-yo thingy which from the start just feels wrong. You can't aim properly, you keep getting yourself exploded with bomb barrels because the length of your weapon is too short and you keep thinking this is on purpose so that you can upgrade it as the game goes,but...no such luck. that is the weapon from start to finish. Pretty much, your main weapon feels like a bug that was never fixed (who the hell tests these games?seriously!)
Having said that, again, Haven's main asset is its dynamism, and you will get plenty of temporary different weapons such as a laser gun or a bouncing ray gun thingie. However, like I said, those are temporary and only last long enough for you to complete a task like going through a tunnel full of baddies.
The graphics reeally show their age in this game so if you're into high-spec games with crystal clear eye-candy jaw-dropping graphics this game is the total opposite of it. For the time it was released it was probably okay, but now it's really not pretty at all. However, this didn't affect my enjoyment, perhaps because I don't care so much about graphics as I do about gameplay.
All in all, Haven is both entertaining and frustrating, but definetly worth checking out if you are into platformers/action games.- Was this review helpful to you?
