Still Something Special. Twice.
By reincarnationfish (20 reviews) from Leeds , 24 Feb 2012[Highly rated reviewer]
For the record...This is the first time I've played these games, this review is unsullied by nostalgia. Although some of their ideas have been re-used by other games since, these are two daring and startlingly original game designs. Ico's paired down mechanics lead lead you to explore those mechanics in detail to solve puzzles, unlike some games that try to create a new puzzle all the time by throwing some new mechanic at you. There are almost no words or subtitles, but the characters and the relationships between them are so well drawn using only animation, that it's still one of the most touching video game relationships you'll ever see. With Shadow of the Colossus the same Dev team isn't afraid to do something very different the game consisting entirely of sixteen huge bosses, but the wordlessness and the sense of melancholy remain and make it a second unique experience.- Was this review helpful to you?

Shadow of its former self.
By a customer , 16 Sep 2012As a massive fan of shadow of the colossus, i couldnt wait for a hd remake, however what ive gotten isnt this. All that they have done really is sharpened up some...and i mean some of the texture mapping. The horsestail mainly and the main character is especially noticeable, however much of the game remains unchanged. What really irritated me was when a colossus moves on the sand, huge shards appear from the floor to make it look like HD sand but comes off looking dreadful. I am also a games collector, and what this re release has done is lowered the value of what was once a rare and sought after game on ps2. The original is still much better than the hd re release (i refuse to name it a remake) despite the ps2 floors and cardboard graphics, its still better than this ps3 version. If you have never played S. O. T. C before then by all means play it because its a staggering game, however those looking to relive the past and have a nostalgia trip, buy the ps2 version, get the original on ebay. Huge let down and a waste of a rental.- Was this review helpful to you?

Fantastic and innovative
By Pwneral (3 reviews) , 23 Aug 2012I absolutely loved Shadow Of The Colossus and replayed the game many times to get all the extras but I found ICO a lot harder to get into. SOTC is fantastic and once you come to grips with the controls and the camera, it's truly a unique experience.- Was this review helpful to you?

Dissapointed compared to the hype
By a customer , 06 Aug 2012Really boring overall, no appeal to play on, didnt finish SoC. People will say that it's amazing just to seem artistic, but it's really not impressive. I was open to it, but theres just nothing to encourage you to play on.- Was this review helpful to you?

Truly Colossal
By tam115 (20 reviews) from Southampton , 06 May 2012These games aew the very definition of why I play video games. They have a story to tell, and tells it the best way possible. No dialogue, no one liners, this tells its story by getting you involved. for Shadow of the colossus with some of the best game-play ever invented, ICO at a deeply emotional level. It doesn't force a back story down your through either, letting you naturally discover how the expansive world came to be. Twitch gamer's will hate it, you have to go a full 10 seconds without shooting something!, but to everyone else it is the best of the best.
For Shadow of the Colossus more imagination and effort is required for each climatic boss fight in this game than most games manage in total. Each is also completely different, they all feel Colossal. That is the best part of this game come to think about it, the Colossus feel big... I don't mean they are big (well they are), I mean you actually feel it. The score is truly epic and you keep playing just to see what the next Colossus will look like.
ICO isn't nearly as good for game-play, but the shear depth of emotion in the characters makes up for it.
Get them, get them now, keep them, treasure them, that is all.- Was this review helpful to you?
