It has to be said that console-based music-making titles are getting closer to their professional studio counterparts all the time. MTV Music Generator 3 is a prime example of this, making it even easier to sound like the pros with a high-quality collection of samples, tools and effects with which you can knock out your own tunes, or use to show off your remixing abilities. The disc comes complete with an array of popular hip-hop, rap and dance chart-toppers, which you're given free reign to mix, remix and sample in order to either show off your DJ'ing skills or use towards creating something more unique. You can also sample from your own music collection by dropping a CD in the drive, ripping a riff and then working it into whatever you're working on. Alternatively, you can start from scratch with the title's Studio mode, which offers a wide variety of samples featuring riffs, beats, basslines and vocal takes that you can splice together using the popular 'building block' method to create your own track. Following this, an impressive collection of effects is on hand that you can use on the tracks or even manipulate 'on the fly' via your Dual Shock's buttons while the track is playing back. Not that it's of great interest with such an application but Music Generator 3 also benefits from a number of aesthetic improvements as well. A very stylised interface has everything looking pretty cool and also goes towards simplifying the proceedings and therefore making life easier for you. As well as this, there's also a video generator, which instantly creates visual effects that match your tracks.

Fun but by no means professional

I was a big fan of the Music Generator on the original Play Station, so I guessed this was going to be much the same, however it isn't. It is very well laid out and relatively easy to use, for the basics anyway. Only it features around 8 tracks, by the likes of Snoop Dogg, some house and some techno stuff, can't remember off hand. But basically you are able to remix any of these tracks very well, easily and it is fun, but once you have messed around and heard these tracks so many times, it becomes very tiresome. So it is off my wish list.
