  • Like a great novel; engrossing and satisfying but not always that enjoyable.

I very much enjoyed this. The story, atmosphere, Metro world, weapons, characters, music and visuals really suck you in and playing the game is a great experience from start to finish. There are a few flaws and bad points but not necessarily anything I would like to see changed; it just wasn't thoroughly enjoyable enough for 5 stars. It reminded me of Bioshock Infinite and Dishonored in it's general structure and gameplay; a fairly linear shooter with a a few RPG elements whose strength's lie not so much in the frantic gameplay of COD but in the superbly crafted world and story. That's not to say the gameplay is poor; it's not at all and it's often very enjoyable. The guns are innovative and satisfying with just enough progression and customisation to maintain an armourer's interest without falling foul of the disposable 5 minutes weapons of Borderlands and Dead Island. The gameplay when facing humans was excellent...but when facing mutants it wasn't very good. Atmospheric and a bit scary, yes, but it generally followed the pattern of creeping through darkness until a hoard of monsters throw themselves at you and you just have to spray them with your limited ammunition. Then you get a boss mutant who you have to constantly pump lead into for 8 years before he dies...often involving restarting the whole level to get through it with different guns and more ammo. Bit boring to be honest and the main negative aspect of the game. The first half of the game was much better than the second half for me; the second half seemed to mainly consist of often frustrating set pieces and was at times a bit of a chore to play through; but you need to play through them to see the story conclusion. The story very much takes over in the second half. To sum up; an excellent well produced game with mostly very good gameplay; just be prepared to wade through the irritating bits. When it's not addictive due to the gameplay though, the story pulls you back in. One final point... I don't really need 'moral choice' in all of my video games, despite the current trend. Sometimes it's a bit of a burden to feel like you have to 'do the right thing' just to get the best ending. They set their stall out with this one; even if you played the prequel game your big 'choice' at the end of that one has no bearing on this game...they just assume you made the bad choice. So right from the start you get the impression choice doesn't matter too much as they didn't write 2 stories depending what choice you made in the first game. Then throughout the whole game there was never any indication that I was either making any choices or that there were any to be made. I quite liked that. Then I get the 'bad ending'! Apparently it's all about little subtle things involving character interaction and where you walk in dream sequences...bit of a blind side that one and a little bit irritating. Shame, because I really enjoyed it on the whole.

This game crashed just as I was starting to get into it. I didn't think it was worth going on if the things so buggy it crashes at the first bit of action.

  • retro style FPS

As i haven't played the first game in the series i was a little bit reluctant about this one but it plays as a story in its own right .So it leads you in with a little training and its off you go. The claustrophobic atmosphere really lends to ramping up the tensions as your playing in small dark corridors most of the time. Now and again you get to see the nuclear ravaged landscape on the surface but this is the most dangerous part of the game. With flying beasties that pick you up and drop you at height in a completely different part of the map annoying as hell but does look good. as far as the game is set out its like a sort of QUAKE or PREY type game where open world gaming is not part of the plan its a strictly complete 1 level and on to the next type of affair..Which is a bit of a step back these days but the game is well done and has great graphics and a compelling if a bit weird story if you enjoy old school FPS games then youll love this 8 out of 10

  • Generic FPS

A generic first person shooter. If you've played any other FPS you'll feel at home with the controls. It makes it interesting by using military grade bullets as currency, leaving you the dilemma of using lesser ammo types to save up, or using the higher power from the best ammo. To be honest, I got bored quickly, the story is dull and the accents are woeful but it's a game that tries to do something different and you might see something I didn't. An ideal rental, but not a buy.
