Miles Edgeworth: Ace Attorney Investigations is the next game in the Ace Attorney series, this time focusing on the original prosecutor Miles Edgeworth. The game play acts as a sort of hybrid from the two sections of the original series. For those who have not played an Ace Attorney game before, you had to solve murder cases, or more specifically defend your clients in court by proving who the real murderer is. You would do this by investigating the crime scene (And other places of interest) and by arguing the toss in court using the evidence you have gathered. This time the game is a hybrid, arguing the toss at the crime scene. Let's take a more in depth look of the game:
Graphics
The one thing that made a law game actually stand out from other games was its colourful graphics. Characters had over-the-top designs and traits, which made a lot of them sort of loveable. This carries on into the Investigations era, with the addition of a general graphical upgrade. Locations are also colourful and appealing. Another addition to this series are full body sprites, so now you can see each character in their entirety wondering around the locations. Overall the graphics have improved over Apollo Justice, and retain the same charm too (Also there is one character called Cammy...What is up with her mouth? Seriously!)
Story
In a game like this, story is possibly the most important aspect of the game. This fails to disappoint. Similarly to Trials and Tribulations, all the cases intertwine with each other, but also have their own story to follow. Each case increases in length and difficulty, as you might have guessed, and each case gets more and more memorable (For me anyway)
**Small Spoilers**
Cases include a murder on an airplane, a murder in an embassy, a murder in a courthouse, a theme park and even Edgeworth's own office!
**End of spoilers**
Overall the story is as strong as any other game, possibly more so!
Characters
Characters are usually where the series shines. Ace Attorney Investigations has plenty of great new characters, as well as the return of some old ones, even a few surprise cameos ROFL (That's a hint...yeah, seriously, he's in the game) The characters are all generally designed well. Personally I'd have liked to have seen a few in a different light, but they really help raise the story to a whole new level.
Audio
I might sound like a broken record (no pun intended) but music is another area where the games have shined brightly. Principle because the music fits every situation. Character music is done well, the music designed for each character really fits each character, but the situational music is fairly different to the previous games. It's not bad, infact, it's pretty good, it's just that it takes a more passive tone. For example, the 'Cornered' theme (Music that plays when you've discovered a significant contradiction) was fast and impactful, as if to say 'HA! TAKE THAT!' Whilst this game reflects Edgeworth's personality through it's music, as if it says 'I just found this contradiction, see, I'm that good! Now, explain this to me!' (I might be the only one who understood what I just said)
Gameplay/Controls.
The gameplay involves absorbing the information presented and working it all out in your head. You do get to look around the crime scene, with the typical walking/selecting controls, but during the testimonies, all you need to do in the game is select statements, press the 'press' button for more information and present evidence. The touch screen isn't used that much. You can use it to look in more detail at pieces of evidence, and you can select things using the touch screen, however there isn't too much more than that, apart from shouting the game defining phrases: Objection! Hold it! Take that! and the brand new....Eureka!
To conclude:
This review does seem to be more of a comparison to the other 4 games, as opposed to a full on game review. However, if you have never played an Ace Attorney game before, all I will say is that although the game may sound boring, it is probably the ONLY game I've played in 20 years that actually makes you feel as though you've achieved something upon completion. Perhaps it makes you feel smarter, and maybe it would inspire you to become a lawyer...
If you've never played this series before, it is a colourful, fun, and can be a challenging game at times. If you have played a game from the series before, the game retains the Ace Attorney magic 110% and improves on the previous game. Ace Attorney fans will buy the game to be loyal, but you can easily rent the game because of the lack of replay value.
