    [Highly rated reviewer]

First off, I'll start by saying 'BUY IT!', but I'll go a little bit more in-depth as you why it is a worthy purchase.

Graphics - Well it's the first thing people notice, they are great, bright, color-full, just as I would expect from a Sonic game, however, when you take a closer look it can look a little bad, but nothing too bad.

Music - Alongside graphics, people notice the music, the music itself can be a little hit or miss at times but, however most levels are from previous games, so they use the same music, for example 'City Escape' uses the 'Follow the Rainbow' tune, and 'Green Hill' uses the 'ol Megadrive classic 'Green Hill'.

There is also the ability to unlock music, which once unlocked can be played in any mission.

    Gameplay:

'Modern Sonic' - Sonic has really taken a beaten from fan the past few years because of this style, but I have to say they are actually good! No glitchs like Sonic '06, and no stupid werewolf of Unleashed, instead it is similar to Unleashed daytime stages, but improved even from that, it sometimes goes to the side-scroller view and then you can even use the 'Rocket' and 'Spikes' from Sonic Colors.

    So all round great!

'Classic Sonic' - Now this is the style a lot of fans has been wanting, this really feels and looks amazing, there is no gimmick (except for you can get a skateboard, but that is just cool!). Sonic 4 used a similar style, but this pulls it off far better, and Sonic does not look strange either, he is actually somewhat cute.

Levels - This is a very cool and nostalgia trip of levels, the levels are re-made versions of previous Sonic games, Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic and Knuckles, Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Heroes, Sonic Unleashed and even Sonic '06!

Story - Without going into to much detail, the story is also actually okay, previous Sonic story-lines have been terrible, but this one is actually okay, lets just say there is a monster going around eating time and that is how the two Sonics meet.

Replayabilty - I'm amazed how much this game has to do, I mean it's Sonic! It has lots of challenge stages which add really interesting things into the mix, with collectibles to collect like Concept Art, Music even more!

Other Stuff - The game has points which you can buy different skill items, for example unlimited boost, faster speed, than kind of thing, and you can even buy Sonic 1 to play! 2 games in 1, BARGAIN!

The Bad - Well it's not perfect, they ignore Sonic 3 and Sonic CD, which is kind of a shame, they don't even show them on the credits screen when there is a video playing, it skips right past them.

The other thing is the bosses can be a little boring, for example the last boss for me was not very 'exciting'.

Final Words - This game is a massive fan service, so if you like ANY of the previous platformer Sonic games you will enjoy this one for sure!

I've been a Sonic fan for years, Sonic '06 was a big disappointment and Unleashed not being much better, Sonic died, well this makes me happy, and I truly feel Sonic is BACK!

So in other words, bye rental, hello limited edition!

I'd been waiting to play this game since it was announced, the collaboration of the vintage arcade fun of the old games combined with the easily controllable speed of the modern Sonic games seemed like the perfect balance and the game that could top all previous titles. but after just completing it, I can say it would be just as enjoyable to go back and get Sonic Adventures, or Unleashed. It's not that the game is bad, it's that the flaws are so large they overshadow whatever glimmers of entertainment it may have to give.

Before I get into what's bad about it, I'll say what's good, because there are redeeming factors. It's brilliant to see almost every memorable character from the series return, even one-time characters like Silver and Blaze from Sonic 2006. Although short, the story is comfortable and feel-good. There's also good new features, like the skill shop, and the level design is still very stylish. And best of all are the boss stages, which stay fresh throughout gameplay.

But the first problem starts with the basics. What's the first thing you want from a Sonic game? Going fast, keeping that speed, feeling smart and quick as you charge through the levels. But the level designs quickly introduce unpredictable traps, unnecessary environment items like the orange rockets in Planet Wisp, and unpredictable traps. Every death feels cheap and is never about having the skill to overcome it, and more about bad timing by not predicting what was ahead of you off screen, even in the modern stages.

Another issue is the challenge gates, some of which make you feel completely taken out of playing a Sonic game at all. When I'm playing Sonic, I want to be running through a complicated and creative environment, not playing ping pong with musical notes against the computer and an awkward camera.

Of course there are lives, which are unneeded, not only because a game in this day and age shouldn't have lives, but they also have no repercussions if you lose them all. However, you'll still feel under pressure if you're running low. Finally, while it is good, the story is unbearably too short. Compared to the week minimum it took me to complete Unleashed at a good pace, Generations only takes a couple of hours each day, and if rushed, could be completed within an afternoon. I'd have expected a much more complicated and expansive story with the collision of the old and new games.

While I'd suggest it as a rent for any Sonic fan just to add it to the list of Sonic games played, it's something that you wouldn't be as driven or enthused to play as possibly almost any in the series to date. I have to say, one of the game's best features is that you can unlock the original Sega Megadrive version of the game, and with infinite lives. To that end, I'd rather just use Generations to play the Sega original.

Good game. If you're a sonic fan, then you should definitely rent this. There is no point buying it, because I finished the game within a week.

  • sonic returns to form

I was a little unsure about this, given recent Sonic games, but its worth a rent. The game itself is good fun, and I did like playing with the 3d mode enabled. I dont think I'd buy this game, but if like me you grew up playing sonic on the megadrive and wamted to see a return to form, here it is. Could it be better, of course but its a step in the right direction and maybe this is a sign that SEGA are gonna take sonic back to former glory.
