Rushed cash in

I'll post the good before the bad.
The graphics are great, the fighting has been refined to better then ever and critical edge has become something useful, rather then being none existent like in SCIV
Create a Soul has also been given noticeable effort with stickers, patterns and special accessories that can be put on the character to give them scars, tattoo's. Patterns if used right can give armour a metallic, shiny look and accessories can give your character horns or floating hearts?
That's pretty much all the good, however its greatly outweighed by the bad. The one and only story is incredibly short and is pretty uninteresting, it had much more potential but ruined it with picture cut scenes and concentrating on mostly one character.
I have never accepted 'its a fighting game' as an excuse for lack of story, MK proved that it can be done, and especially since SC actually does have a pretty interesting set up and characters.
Other then story mode though, offline modes are very small, you have arcade mode which is six random battles, quick battles that you can win to get titles to use online and Legendary souls, which is arcade mode but on hard.
Which brings me to my next criticism, the AI on this game is absolutely pathetic! It's not really noticeable on story mode, but arcade AI rank E-C are just empty, jumping into your attacks like they get off on it. B ranks can be annoying but are overall beatable, But A ranks are just pathetic, they read every move you do, reacting to moves no normal person could and just pounding away with the most advanced combo's. Seriously, good luck even winning one round against Kilik on Legendary souls mode without resorting to cheapness.
Last criticism, rather small but shows just how lazy this game is. This game does not even have an encyclopaedia... Considering how the story is set 17 years after the last and has a lot of new characters, mostly just replacements of older ones, but do you want to know more about Kilik's replacement, Xiba and how if any way they are related? Or how about brand new characters like ZWEI or Viola?....Well, tough. Most of the new characters are just empty shells with no back story whatsoever.
In Summary: This game pretty much depends on its online mode to last, if you don't have much interest in CaS or online, then you really shouldn't bother with this cash in of a game.- Was this review helpful to you?

(18)Major disappointment
By GregR (8 reviews) , 21 Oct 2012When I first heard there would be a story mode to Soul Calibur 5 I thought too highly of it, turns out the story was really rubbish and I thought that everything else, even the combat was a lot worse than Soulcalibur 4.- Was this review helpful to you?

Good, but not for me

This game is graphically excellent and may appeal to fans of the genre. I was a fan of games like virtua fighter and fighting vipers for the Sega Saturn, and the more recent virtua fighter titles, so I was hoping this would be my sort of game.
Upon arriving at the title screen, I was mostly confused. There were various play options including a story mode, and an arcade mode, but they weren't laid out in a simple way.
At first, I went to character creation. This was a bit of a let down, as it used mostly pre-set body types, and accessory items would often hang loose off the body of your created character, rather than hugging their figure as expected. It was nowhere near as impressive as in the WWE games.
Story mode started out well with animated scenes, then got gradually worse as animations changed to static pictures with narration. At this point I lost interest in the story, and just wanted to skip to the next fight. The fighting did at least manage to hold my attention for all of the story mode, but I did feel like I was mostly button mashing as there was no help with how to perform moves.
Next, I tried the training mode, because I was hoping to learn some moves that would help me in battle. Unfortunately, apart from a few simple few moves, everything required too many button presses to be fluent in battle, compounded by the confusion of the ABKG button labels. Even when settling for one character it was difficult to learn all the tools needed to succeed at harder difficulty levels or online.
Overall, the game is well put together and will appeal to people who love fighting games, but I just found it inaccessible, and I will stick to virtua fighter or even street fighter for my fighting games.- Was this review helpful to you?

kids will love it
By Mikee33 (11 reviews) , 26 May 2012Didn't really enjoy this one, found the bright colours when you do special moves very annoying. This is not really one for the hardcore gamers like myself but kids will love it.- Was this review helpful to you?
