Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six 3

Already released for PS2 and Xbox some time ago, the latest instalment in Red Storm's Tom Clancy-inspired tactical shooter has now made what is gradually becoming the rather endangered port to GameCube. The game is more or less a direct conversion, albeit without the offer of an Internet-based multiplayer mode.

As is normally the case in the R6 series, you take command of an elite, multinational squad of special operatives and embark on the quest to put a stop to the latest bout of international terrorism. As the story goes, it's the year 2007 and the world is on the brink of a terrifying global conflict. As the United States is caught in an embargo-induced oil crisis, terrorist attacks against American interests escalate. Venezuela, which still supplies the United States with oil, also becomes a target. As unrest grows in America, protests rock the streets of Caracas, and while the shadow of terror looms, madmen plot even greater acts of murder and destruction. This is where you come in, along with the super-cool Team Rainbow, some of the most sophisticated technology available, and a fair amount of stealth and shooting skill.

The game has 15 missions on offer in total, which have you sampling the delights of such locations as London, the Cayman Islands and Rio de Janeiro. Tying everything together is an immersive storyline with events that directly affect gameplay, as well as a wealth of Hollywood-style cinematics, directed by Marco Brambilla of Demolition Man fame.

As you'd expect, a healthy arsenal of over 30 weapons is available throughout - vital in the completion of each task - including a massive variety of sub machine guns, assault rifles, shotguns, sniper rifles, as well as grenades, charges, mines, and tear gas.

As mentioned before, the multiplayer side of things appears in somewhat diminished capacity in the GameCube version, with the absence of online connectivity making way for a simpler split-screen affair. But here you've still got a wide variety of competitive game modes, including survival and team survival, as well as the option of a co-op mode.
