    [Highly rated reviewer]

I found this much better than anticipated given that it is one of the lower priced wii games. It features a whole range of Winter Olympics events which vary greatly in difficulty. My only complaint would be that the skiing is incredibly difficult compared to the luge/bobsleigh or speed skating events. Other than this it is a really enjoyable game for most ages, I particularly enjoyed the bobsleigh events and the cross-country skiing. A range of different games modes (career, multiplayer, single event etc) and leagues makes it a game that you can get a lot of gameplay out of...well worh renting

to decide that this was pants!

It looks good and the commentators are humorous enough.

But there is no substance to the game.

The menus are badly laid out making it hard to see where you want to go.

There are 4 versions of skiing - WHY?

Bobsled/Luge/Skeleton - yes in real life they are all different but on the WII - all very similar.

Figure Skating (was looking forward to this) it was little more than waggle the wiimote.nunchuck in time to the music. So distracting I couldn't actually see what effect this had on the skater - unless I got it wrong and sent her across the ice on her backside.

Then came curling: let's face it this is Bowling on ice and something that we know the Wii can do well. The controls for this were so complicated it was more luck than judge that we actually managed to send a stone down the ice.

    AVOID THIS LIKE THE PLAGUE.

Might I suggest Mario and Sonic's Winter Olympics (which I haven't even played yet!)

The potential for a fun interactive Wii winter sports game are huge. The wide variety of events should mean that the motion sensitive way the Wii works should allow some novel ways of playing the game. Unfortunately this doesn't come to pass. Some of the events are simple to pick up, speed skating & cross country skiing, but most of the other sports require too delicate a motion with the controls to have any real impact on the game. Down hill skiing is almost impossible, turning slightly with the controls brings you character to a stop. Ski jumping is equally as tricky. The figure skating has what looks to be a clever way of playing, effectively drumming with the controllers to a beat, or when the symbol reaches a point. Despite timing this well, the majority of the time these movements were not recognised by the game, leading to a poor performance in the event.

As with many Wii games, the controls really let the game down. It appears that the developers have tried to do too much with the controls. One of the best games for the Wii is still Wii Sports, for the simple reason you can pick the controls up and within 5 minutes be adept at the game. This is the sort of market the Wii is aimed at, a more social form of gaming and the ability to pick a game up quick is a large part of this. If users struggle on the easiest settings then there is little longevity for a game.
